Other than the obvious things that you need the data plan for like GPS - the 3G/4G iPad will work exactly like the WiFi model. You should only need to connect to a WiFi network and be able to use FaceTime. If you are not using the 3G/4G service - you can turn it off if you want to.
You do not need a data plan to use GPS. GPS is independent of plans. GPS uses GPS satellites. You only need the data plan with respect to GPS if you want real time road conditions, etc. Turn-by-turn navigation and tracking work without a data plan.
You don't have to turn Cellular off in Settings for that to happen, but you may as well; if you don't you incur a bit more battery drain as it works in the background and also use up a bit of your data plan connection time.
If there is no sim card tray, how can you get an internet data plan? I don't want to have to keep using public Wi-Fi. And I need to be able to access the internet, get emails & notifications on the go.
Whilst you cannot add Cellular service to a WiFi Only model of iPad (it has no Cellular radio hardware), you can purchase a Cellular hotspot Router from your chosen Cellular operator - or from many electronics retailers - to which you can add a Cellular Service plan.
I don't want to set up a cellular data plan.... Maybe someday in the future, but not now. I don't see any way to turn this off. Under the cellular option in settings, there is no toggle to turn this on or off. I read elsewhere something about turning off Bluetooth, but this does not fix my problem.
My sister bought a new ipad air and she said she can only run it on wifi because it wants them to set up a data plan.. they have go phones and dont want a data plan and this ipad is worthless to them..can anyone tell me what to say to her to help so she can use it like a normal ipad?
There are 2 different settings on your WiFi + Cellular iPad model, one for wireless (or WiFi) and the other for Cellular data. If you don't have a cellular plan for the iPad, there's no reason to leave cellular radio ON all the time because it really does nothing without a data plan (and eats up battery too). Go to Settings - Cellular Data. Switch it OFF.
In order to be able to "get on" the internet you must use EITHER WIFI or CELLULAR DATA. If she doesn't want to buy a plan for the iPad, she can just use WIFI, but she must connect to a wifi or be in a wifi zone. The iPad by itself doesn't have internet access without one of these two things.
Just an update.. the solution asking Siri to "turn off cellular data" worked for us. However, if one is not connected to a wifi and you ask for service by opening a web browswer or other app that needs internet it still will ASK you to set up Cell plan.. BUT it won't pop up every 5- 10 mintues like it did before. In a 24 hour period it only popped up ONCE.... and that is a big improvement.
Thx @tweenulzeven for the answer. As I was expecting; though, would appreciate seeing this feature implemented by SU developers. To work on 2D floor plans on desktop is ok, but on iPad it is kind of disturbing constant orbiting on any slight pencil touch. Just wanted to see if there are more community users seeing this as an issue; and if this can be a feature implemented in the future (i.e. disable orbit, or some kind of 2D working mode).
If you are signed into the same Apple ID on the iPad as you are on the phone, and you have the iPad selected on the iPhone in Settings>Phone>Text Message forwarding, then yes, you can do text messaging from the iPad. You do not need to have a cellular plan on the iPad, and unless you specifically purchased a wi-fi and cellular iPad, you won't be able to have cellular data anyway.
