Despite the status of Arabic as a global language and the high demand to learn it, the field of Arabic second language acquisition remains under investigated. Second language acquisition findings are crucial for informing and advancing the field of Arabic foreign language pedagogy including Arabic language teaching, testing, and syllabus design.
Arabic Second Language Learning and Effects of Input, Transfer, and Typology provides data-driven empirical findings for a number of basic and high-frequency morpho syntactic structures with two novel typological language pairings, examining Arabic second language acquisition data from adult L1 Chinese- and Russian-speaking learners of Arabic as a foreign language. Alhawary's study examines the different processes, hypotheses, and acquisition tendencies from the two learner groups, and documents the extent of the successes and challenges faced by such learners in their L2 Arabic grammatical development during the first three years of learning the language. In addition, the book offers both theoretical and practical implications related to input exposure, L1 and L2 transfer, and typological and structural proximity effects.

In the first part of the workshop (approx. 45 minutes), Dr. Ruba Khamam (University ofLeeds) will give a presentation on Connected Learning and show an example CL inpractice where students create and take part in authentic language tasks. Dr. LetiziaLombezzi (University of Siena) will introduce Relational Learning (RL) as a type of CL,explore the concept of being empirical and how it relates to CL, followed by a shortelicitation session where workshop participants expand on CL/RL potentials. Dr.Hossam Ahmed (Leiden University) will demonstrate how to use Twine, a DigitalHumanities tool for telling non-linear stories, to create highly customized non-linearlearning paths that are effective in mixed-level classes. Mr. Zehad Sabry (University ofOslo) will demonstrate a connected learning unit (via digital storytelling), showing thesteps of designing a digital-story-telling project-based unit, including instructions andrubrics.
In the hands-on part of the workshop (approx. 2h15min.), participants will work ingroups to create Connected Learning experiences. Participants will design languagelearning modules which incorporate CL/DL/DST.
Goal:The attendees will create a lesson plan to maximize and optimize the implementation of the 21st century foreign language learning and innovation skills through Artificial Intelligence.
