There is a story that the name Mangpo came from the fact that there was a embankment built as a breakwater in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, so it was called embankment head, manggae, and mangpo. In the old days, seawater flowed in and there was an inlet, and it is said that there was a place where mud came out when the ground was dug.[2]

People who have lived in this area for a long time or Suwon natives call it 'Mangpo-ri'. On the one hand, it is close to Yeongtong and developed later than Yeongtong, so it is also called 'Shinyeongtong' along with Banwol-dong, Hwaseong-si, and Seonong-dong, Yongin-si. Like Yeongtong, it was incorporated into Suwon-si from Taean-eup, Hwaseong-gun in 1995. Mangpo-dong was an outskirts rice field area when it was incorporated into Suwon, but after the development of the Yeongtong district, in the early 2000s, it was recklessly developed as apartment complexes were built along with Banwol-dong, Hwaseong-si, and Seonong-dong, Yongin-si. However, since 2010, Suwon City has developed Mangpo districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 sequentially to prevent reckless development, and now it has developed to the point that many new apartments are included in Yeongtong-gu. After a pride battle between Suwon City and Hwaseong City, there is the former Parkjiseong-ro, which was renamed 'Dongtanjiseong-ro'. In the past, there were paddy fields so large that one could enter a paddy field and be trapped at night without finding one's way. As an aside, there is Park Ji-sung Soccer Center (JSFC) next to Dongtanjiseong-ro.

Mangpo Station on the Bundang Line (Bangjuk Station at the time of planning) opened on the outskirts of the dong. Since the station does not enter the center of Shinyeongtong, it is in fact built in Yeongtong. The address of Mangpo Station is also Yeongtong-dong. After Mangpo Station served as the terminal until December 2013[3], it was handed over to Suwon Station, and in September 2020, when the Suin-Bundang Line was opened, Suwon Station also handed over the terminal station to Gosaek Station and Incheon Station. However, despite the loss of the terminal station status, the number of passengers is steadily maintained, because there is a demand for buses going to Dongtan through Yeongtong-ro. Actually, it is because it is the point where the bus going to the terminal from various places in Yeongtong-dong and the bus going to Maetan Ingye meet.

On April 15, 2019, Taejang-dong was divided into Mangpo 1-dong and Mangpo 2-dong. Accordingly, the existing Taejang-dong Community Center was converted into the Mangpo 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center, and the Mangpo 1-dong Community Center leased a floor of a nursing hospital and is using it as a temporary government building.

From July 24, 2020, a part of Mangpo-dong was incorporated into Hwaseong-si to solve the problem of the deformed living area in Banjeong-dong, Hwaseong-si.
