            Avda Patrice Lumumba 770, Maputo

Summary: The presentor will lead a discussion on the experience of innovation strategies in development around the world.  He will move from an initial discussion on the innovation system and efforts to build a culture of innovation into specific initiatives and policy areas where there are often found to be systemic weaknesses such as coordination and implementation. These could include, depending on the audience’s interest, reform of higher education and R&D institutes, generation of new knowledge based firms, technology upgrading in existing firms, role of infrastructure (telecoms and science parks) and special incentives, technology transfer arrangements and venture capital among others.

Presenter: Bob Hodgson

Bio: Bob Hodgson is a business economist with more than thirty years experience of economic assessment, policy formulation and analysis, project evaluation and implementation across a wide variety of sectors, institutions, regions and countries.  He has specialised over the last few years in the role of technology in development and the drive from new science to improve competitiveness and productivity especially within programmes to stimulate private sector involvement with research and higher education institutions and the incubation of new firms from the knowledge base. S&T parks have been a frequent topic in many of these studies.
