how to set system-wide font size?

When we build the ADL Workbench for Linux, the point size looks like
about 11, and everything comes out chunky and takes more space than it
should. On Windows it is 9 or 10, and looks right. How can I set, in one
place, the default system font point size?

I looked in the EV_APPLICATION_GTK_DEPENDENT_IMP (or whatever it's
called - I'm no longer on that computer!) and can see that it chooses
the default font by looking around to see what's available, doing
various checks etc etc. I guess it's the same on Windows. But how to set
it - just the point size, that's the one that affects layout?
