Applet support is declining. What is an alternative for the eID applet?

Hello,

The support of applets is declining. Chrome and Edge doesn't support applets anymore. Firefox will stop supporting applets at the end of 2016.

And Oracle / Sun will deprecate applets in Java 9.

Maybe an alternative solution is based on Java Web Start (jnlp)? The Java Web Start can be launched from the browser by opening a JNLP URL.

Is it possible to create a Java Web Start application that can communicate with the eID Applet Service (AppletServiceServlet)?

Is working Fedict on a Java Web Start alternative or other alternative for the eID applet?

I was also thinking about using the eID Identity Provider (https://code.google.com/archive/p/eid-idp/)

But I think this provider also needs the eID applet.
