The Belgian eID signature solution is undergoing an important evolution. Whereas a qualified electronic signature was previously created using the signature certificate stored on the identity card or residence card, a transition is now being made towards a Remote Signing model.
How will it work?
In the Remote Signing model, the actual signature operation will take place in a certified and secure private cloud environment (remotely), while the authentication certificate of the identity and residence cards (combined with the Federal Authentication Service) will be used as the authentication mechanism to access this secure environment.
In this new and dynamic model, the Belgian Digital Identity Wallet (the MyGov.be app) can also be used as both an authentication and signing tool.
Rollout and planning
The solution will be made available to Belgian citizens as of May 2026. Due to the new transition measures in the European eIDAS Regulation, a portion of citizens will be required to switch to this more dynamic and secure solution at that time.
