read BEID identity in web application

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to read the data from a Belgian EID and us it in a web application (php). I've been reading up on this, but the solutions i found Eid applet or dropping image in a web page are not satisfying. At the moment i have a java aplet on my page that i call via javascript and so i get the data onto the web server. But we are moving to chrome and this way of working isn't supported anymore.

Could someone point me i the direction of a (free) alternative solution (HTML5? Plugin?)
