Hi,

The EIANZ Ecology website has been undergoing some changes, so thanks for your patience. We had a problem with the Email Newsletter system for a month but it is now fixed. Here is a list of the recent posts for March.

There is an ongoing focus on biodiversity offsets with a workshop last week in Canberra. Information about this workshop will go online in the next few days. There was also a benchmark case in NSW where a public sector manager was prosecuted for breach of environmental legislation. As always, please let us know what you are doing. We are always interested in receiving short articles of relevance to the profession.

Professional Certification

As a first step, we need appropriately qualified ecologists to become certified so we can establish the reputation of CEnvP.
Please, if you believe you qualify (see the article "Should I be Certified" above), do apply at http://www.cenvp.org for the next round. If you do not yet have the relevant number of years experience, then please consider joining EIANZ and becoming actively involved in understanding the principles under which practitioners work. Over time, there is a real scope to improve the profession if we take our own initiative to regulate standards.

Ecological Impact Assessment Guidelines

Our colleagues in New Zealand have begun the process of considering EcIA Guidelines. In the coming weeks we hope to bring you more and there will be the chance for comment at some stage, when there is a document prepared. Note, we will also be running a workshop in August at the INTECOL Conference in Brisbane.

"Breaking the Barriers" Symposium on Linear Infrastructure

EIANZ SEQ is running a 3-day symposium - a must for any environmental consultant and ecologist who works on linear developments such as roads, railways and pipelines. See the link to postings below for more detail. A symposium brochure can be downloaded here.
