I experienced continuous crashing of file explorer when I upgraded my windows 10 installation to version 1511. After much experimentation I fixed it by going into control panel -> appearance and personalisation -> file explorer options -> clicking 'Clear' button ie clear explorer history. Old data in the history was causing my crash. If this doesn't work try changing 'Open File Explorer To' from 'Quick Access' to 'This PC'.

A few months ago I ended up requiring to change my computer's SID to fix a problem it had been having- Instead of fixing the problem, though, it screwed up my at-the-time current install of windows, to the point of me needing to do a fresh install. As I am in possession of an OEM copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit, I successfully reinstalled over the dead copy with that (all the files that were on the computer previous to this windows install were put in a Windows.old folder). Everything installed and worked absolutely fine, except for one thing. The problem I am experiencing is that, in some Windows Explorer windows, the explorer pane doesn't show. Instead, it simply shows a white area where the pane would show. This makes some software not usable, I recently realized; Software such as Cubase, which use just the explorer pane to select file save locations, cannot save at all as the pane itself is... not operational. Below is a screenshot of this problem as it occurs in cubase;...and again as it shows in UTorrent in the save location selector window. The highlighted area is where the sidebar would NORMALLY be.Pardon my scribbling over some of the things in the window- I would personally rather the internet did not get a glimpse of my files.I have yet to find a common reason why the pane works in some applications when they pull explorer, and others not. I have yet to see it go away, and the software affected by it has been affected since I reinstalled my copy of windows. Initially, I was able to live with it as I can type out save locations in the file name bar to navigate, but with software like Cubase, I do not have this option.Reinstalling windows again is NOT an option.

After posting this question originally, I did some research on the problem in question, and it turns out that this is extremely easily fixable via replacing the file "ExplorerFrame.DLL" which is located in the System32 and SystemWOW64 Folders, in the windows folder, on the C:\ drive.

Errors related to explorerframe.dll can arise for a few different different reasons. For instance, a faulty application, explorerframe.dll has been deleted or misplaced, corrupted by malicious software present on your PC or a damaged Windows registry.

In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall explorerframe.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.

I had today that same problem, but my pc is on the stable channel, even if this is a insiders forum I think this may be relevant/useful.
In my case it was caused by the public release on windows update of the KB5030310 update that brings copilot and the new file explorer, the file explorer was completely unusable aside from the desktop and taskbar, whenever it attempted to open any folder the explorer.exe process just crashed and restarted by itself.
After uninstalling that update the problem was solved, I would suggest reverting back the latest update if you did not try that already, then put a pause on the updates until someone at MS works on it.

Do not download explorerframe.dll from a "DLL download" website. There are many reasons why downloading a DLL file like that is a bad idea. If you need a copy of this file, it's best to obtain it from its original, legitimate source.

At first, I thought..there is no any other solution to this problem. But, yesterday I took a risk and tried to boot windows 10 from a USB. In my case, it only showed that, it was being updated/installed. And the main thing is that, I didn't lose any of my files or softwares.

SetWindowsHookEx is used for interception of events - commonly used by keyloggers for intercepting keystrokes typed by the user - but there are many genuines of use of it. In fact, all of Win32 GUI-based applications will use SetWindowsHookEx if you have a feature which is enabled by default where all other windows active will minimise when you drag the title-bar of a program's window around.

explorerframe.dll is a module belonging to Microsoft Windows Operating System from Microsoft Corporation.
Non-system processes like explorerframe.dll originate from software you installed on your system. Since most applications store data on your hard disk and in your system's registry, it is likely that your computer has suffered fragmentation and accumulated invalid entries which can affect your PC's performance.

In Windows Task Manager, you can see what CPU, memory, disk and network utilization is causing the ExplorerFrame process. To access the Task Manager, hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys at the same time. These three buttons are located on the far left of your keyboard.

The explorerframe.dll is an executable file on your computer's hard drive. This file contains machine code. If you start the software Microsoft Windows Operating System on your PC, the commands contained in explorerframe.dll will be executed on your PC. For this purpose, the file is loaded into the main memory (RAM) and runs there as a ExplorerFrame process (also called a task).

Many non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system.explorerframe.dll is used by 'Microsoft Windows Operating System'. This is an application created by 'Microsoft Corporation'.

If you no longer use Microsoft Windows Operating System, you can permanently remove this software and thus explorerframe.dll from your PC. To do this, press the Windows key + R at the same time and then type 'appwiz.cpl'. Then find Microsoft Windows Operating System in the list of installed programs and uninstall this application.

The window for Control Panel do not take properties from the 20482 UIfile of explorerframe.dll while using OldNewExplorer> I personally use the Update One Resources method of windows style builder, so my theme taking custom properties for the UIfile of explorerframe.dll existed to shellsttyle different from the microsoft default one((that exist to C:\Windows\System32 ) > those custom 20482 UIfile explorerframe.dll properties/parameters are working properly for 'This Pc' shortcut, but not for the default Control panel shortcut, or for my custom shortcut named 'My Computer' .

@scc you could try changing the options in internet explorer to have it save files onto the desktop (that is what I always do in my browsers). However I use classic shell which makes it show the desktop when there isnt anything open and gives me my classic start menu back (like previous windows). My problem with this solution is that it requires me to download and possibly install resource hacker which is a program I would only use once for this purpose. It would have been better if the op had just posted a link to the file that has been already modified. However I just used the other method and renamed UIRibbon.dll. The downsides of not being able to use paint, or wordpad will not effect me since I replaced those with the paint and wordpad from xp (I prefer xp versions anyway so its something I had already planned). I also replaced sound recorder with xp version and I never use internet explorer so that wouldnt bother me.

@Freddy: Excellent. Will test that out.FreddyOctober 18, 2022 at 1:49 amThis the hard link command line

Thanks for the method the works for 22H2. One problem is , my computer comes with 22H2 and there is no C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.608_none_b3fd0d5042b63bbd\explorer.exe on the computer. Anyone has a copy?

When I was running 22631.2283 (KB5030219), everything was working fine. But after upgrading to 22631.2361 (KB5030310), the file explorer won't open anymore. Also shortcuts involving the explorer.exe, like ncpa.cpl, won't open anymore while shell shortcurts as sysdm.cpl do still work. When opening notepad.exe, i can do File -> Open and browse my drives, this is also still working.

But when opening explorer.exe directly, i get the following entry in the windows event viewer:

Warning! This bug is fixed in 1.1.0.2 When you have more than one user in Windows, Explorer will fail to start for other users at your PC. This is caused by wrong access rights at file c:\windows\system32\explorerframe.dll. I'll fix as soon as possible.
