We all know the common idiom about the glass being considered as either half-full or half-empty. And the related assessment if in consequence someone has an optimistic or a pessimistic outlook on life.

Is it really so simple?

Personally, I favor a third way which I call Being A Realistic Optimist. Meaning that in general and for most situations I am a (very) positive, i.e. an optimistic thinker. However, in particularly challenging situations (e.g. before and during very complicated negotiations with many unknown and unfavorable variables) from time to time I might apply a more conservative style. As youll find out below this has certain advantages.

THE OPTIMIST

The word "Optimism is originally derived from the Latin optimum, meaning "best." Being optimistic, in the typical sense of the word, ultimately means one expects the best possible outcome from any given situation.

Research has found that positive, i.e. optimistic thinking can aid in coping with stress, in becoming more resilient, in being more courageous, and in addition it is playing a significant role in improving ones health and well-being.

According to Martin Seligmann people with a so-called optimistic explanatory style tend to give themselves credit when good things happen; and typically blame outside forces for bad outcomes. They also look at negative events as temporary and atypical.

THE PESSIMIST

The term "Pessimism derives from the Latin word pessimus meaning 'the worst'. Pessimissm is a state of mind in which one anticipates undesirable outcomes or believes that the evil or hardships in life outweigh the good or luxuries.

Individuals with a pessimistic explanatory style often blame themselves when bad things happen, but fail to give themselves adequate credit for successful outcomes. They also have a tendency to view negative events as expected and lasting.

At the same time certain studies which examined the consequences of unrealistic optimism have found that greater optimism is associated with less preventive behavior, i.e. that sometimes a negative style might lead to being more focused, better prepared, and more cautious.

THE REALISTIC OPTIMIST

Albert Bandura, one of the founding fathers of modern psychology, argued already decades ago that optimism is the basis for creating and maintaining motivation to reach goals. And that an individual's success is mostly based on the fact whether or not she believes she will succeed. The results of his findings have yet to be proven wrong.

Unrealistic optimists (I also refer to them as naive realists), on the one hand, are convinced that success will happen to them almost automatically and that they will succeed effortless. Some of them even think (and hope) that only by sending out positive thoughts the universe might reward them by transforming all of their wishes and asiprations into reality.

Realistic optimists are vigorously optimistic, too. They strongly believe that they make things happen and that they will succeed. They have no doubt about it. Saying that, on the other hand, they perfectly know that in order of being successful they have to plan well, to access all necessary resources, to stay focused and persistent, to evaluate different options, and to execute in excellence. Having done all of that, i.e. being well prepared and organized, such a state again stimulates their confidence level and as a result their optimism.

A novel heuristic method, called Forward And Backward Reaching Inverse Kinematics (FABRIK), is described that avoids the use of rotational angles or matrices, and instead finds each joint position via locating a point on a line. Thus, it converges in few iterations, has low computational cost and produces visually realistic poses. Constraints can easily be incorporated within FABRIK and multiple chains with multiple end effectors are also supported.

This paper addresses the problem of manipulating articulated figures in an interactive and intuitive fashion for the design and control of their posture using the FABRIK algorithm; the algorithm has been extended to support a variation of different joints and has been evaluated on a humanoid model.

Set in 1992, in the fictional state of San Andreas (based primarily on California and Nevada), players control Carl "CJ" Johnson, a former leader of the Grove Street Families street gang. Drawn back to his home city of Los Santos following the murder of his mother, CJ finds his family and neighborhood threatened by rival gangs and corrupt police officers. Hoping to avert disaster, CJ embarks on a quest across San Andreas to rebuild the Grove Street Families and protect his loved ones.

This weapon was originally going to be a Glock 17, but for some reason Rockstar forgot to render it as such. However, the Glock 17 can be seen in numerous cut scenes. Instead, they left in the old M1911A1 render from Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City. Called the "9mm", it is used by all members of the San Andreas Law Enforcement community and by many criminals in-game. Unrealistically, this weapon carries 17 rounds in a magazine (like the Glock it was supposed to be), and isn't very powerful. When the player reaches the "Hitman" skill level, CJ can wield two of these pistols at once (as does every Ammu-Nation vendor should the player decide to provoke him). A suppressed version is also available for use in the game. It does more damage but uses a different ammunition type than the regular "9mm" and cannot be dual-wielded.

In-game Ammu-Nation gun stores sell the standard M1911A1 and/or 30 rounds for $200, while the suppressed M1911A1 retails at a much pricier $600 for either the suppressed handgun and/or 30 rounds, possibly making this game title the first where a handgun's suppressor is worth more than the handgun itself. The standard M1911A1 becomes available at Ammu-Nation after the Doberman mission, while the suppressed version also requires that the Gray Imports mission be completed.

The Desert Eagle appears under its real name and is, fittingly, the most powerful handgun in the game, possessing a true-to-life seven-round magazine capacity. Catalina (the main antagonist of Grand Theft Auto III, who makes an appearance as an allied, but annoying, character in San Andreas) uses one in some missions given by her to CJ, and one of this game's major antagonists, Officer Eddie Pulaski (voiced by Chris Penn), carries one during the mission High Noon. CJ is seen holding one during the final mission "End of the Line". Cesar Vialpando uses one in a mission during the Los Santos riots (the in-game counterpart of the real-life 1992 Los Angeles riots), as does CJ's brother Sweet. The Grove Street Families gang members can also obtain these, complete with an MP5 and a knife, instead of their standard M1911A1, if the player finds and sprays the Grove Street Families logo onto 100 hidden graffiti gang tags in the game world.
