A Week Away was an idea that originated from a weekend trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. My best friend and I were gifted this opportunity by someone who felt I could use some time away. It had been almost four years since doctors had diagnosed me with Stage III Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare and aggressive form of Cancer that attacks the brain and spine.

The University's Electronic Billing (E-Bill) system is the official means of generating tuition bills to enrolled study away students. Paper bills are not mailed. Students, and the additional users they authorize, are notified by e-mail each time a new billing statement becomes available. The Electronic bill is a monthly billing statement, and you will only receive an Electronic bill if you have a balance on your account.

This webpage does not provide comprehensive information on the transfer credit guidelines. Students should thoroughly review the Transfer Credits Information section in ASK, as well as review their plans and the transfer credit guidelines with a study away and degree completion dean prior to taking any courses elsewhere with an expectation of transfer credit or advanced standing.

To receive transfer credit, the host institution and each course must be evaluated for transfer eligibility per Brown's transfer credit guidelines. Students are responsible for reviewing these guidelines thoroughly before studying away, and must obtain the appropriate approvals in ASK. Students who study away enroll directly at their host institutions. An official transcript must be sent to the Brown Registrar. Without the aforementioned, courses taken elsewhere will not transfer.

With the exception of transfer students (including RUE and veterans), students may not receive more than one semester of transfer credits and advanced standing, whether from pre-Brown or post-matriculation study, without prior approval for an exception to advanced standing policy from the Committee on Academic Standing (CAS). Part II of the Writing Requirement can not be completed with a study away course, and under no circumstances can a student earn and apply in excess of 15 course credits via transfer credit towards undergraduate Brown degree requirements.

Approval to use a non-Brown course to satisfy a concentration requirement is not the same as approval of that course for transfer credit. In order to use a study away or a study abroad course as a substitute for a concentration requirement, a student must obtain separate approval from their concentration advisor. This approval should be requested and recorded in the student's concentration declaration as part of their course plan. Subject to a concentration advisor's approval, students may substitute non-Brown work for concentration requirements, whether that work appears on the student's internal academic record or not.

Student away game tickets can be purchased for varying prices through the Student Ticket Portal on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is no request/claim process for away games. No loyalty points are earned for attending away games.

Students will need to purchase a voucher through the Student Ticket Portal during the open sales period for away games. The open sales period for away games begins 2-4 weeks in advance of the game. Should tickets remain available after the first day, students will be able to purchase one guest voucher as well. Tickets will be available until they run out.

Students wishing to sit together for away games must either designate one person to pick up all their tickets using pickupmytix.utk.edu or come together to the pickup location and pick up tickets together.

We know that for many students, taking time away during your studies doesn't feel like a viable option. While they are not as common as undergraduate study away programs, the past few years have seen an increase in opportunities that are targeted at recent graduates who would like to take time for a travel/study/internship/work experience. When exploring your options for programs such as this, try sticking to search terms like "gap year" or "post baccalaureate," as search terms related to "post graduate" are more likely to turn up graduate-level study programs!

Once you have an idea of what you would like to study during your time away, or where you would like to go, you'll likely have a third question: how will I fund my study away? Have a look below to see options for accessing grants and scholarships through Bennington, using a Consortium Agreement to transfer some of the funding you receive to the program of your choice, or applying for external grants and scholarships. In addition to these specific pages, don't forget to consider your own network and the network your chosen program opens up to you! For example, if you are studying away in Germany, have a look for funding provided to incoming international students by the German government. If you hold citizenship of a country besides the US, check to see what, if any, funding that country's government may offer to students studying overseas. If you carry a specific identity or personal characteristic, have a look at organizations that represent or support people with that identity to see what funding might be available for study. Remember, if you don't ask, you'll never know!
