Dear "Script as Material Culture" Workshop Colleagues,

This is ALAZNE LEGARRETA writing from Le Collège de France in Paris. First things first, I would like to begin by thanking Kathryn Piquette for organizing our "Script Workshop" and providing us the opportunity to have a relaxed but intense discussion during Origins 3 in London.

Secondly, I would like to state that all papers seem to be really interesting and I am looking forward to meeting you all in London. Concerning Dr. Maira Torcia Rigillo´s paper I would like to ask her personally if she could please answer me a few questions about the collection of Clay sealing that she has examined.

As far as I remember from the IX Congrès International des Egyptologues, Grenoble, 2004, all the materials then presented are dated of the reigns of Pharaohs Cheops and Chephen or not known (unknown king). To which reign do the oldest examples of seals that you study belong?  Which are the oldest titles that occur in these materials?

Thank you very much in advance and I really look forward to hearing from you all soon.

All the best,

ALAZNE LEGARRETA

Dear Alazne,
Thanks for your interest about my research on clay sealings. This
class of materials give really us a lot of information. I am glad you
remember my speech in Grenoble about the cretulae with Cheops and
Chefren seal impressions. Beside these, I named a last group of 104
cretulae with figurative seal impressions. Now, I am going to present
some of these pieces at the Congress in London. They seem to be the
most ancient of the whole group from Giza for some analogies with
materials dated to Naqada and Thinite period but it need to have in
mind that inscriptions with the kings name and officials titles are
missing at all. To conclude, the oldest titles are those of Cheops
age.
We will have the opportunity to discuss the topic in London.
Many thanks
Maira Torcia
