Dear Phillipe,
I completely understand what you are saying, and I am totally feeling how you feel as it was and still is one of the most serious problems we as masreyeen have. We used to have it all, ever since fer3oon, but now, watching the situation and seeing that people who are sitting on the korsi are feeling like fer3oon, think they own everything and they are God, asta3'fero Allah, think they can buy and sell everything 3ashan aslaha beta3et gedohom Allah yer7amo. El moseeba el kobra they are selling not only companies, they are selling people. It's very sad when people can be bought and sold for the sake of el masla7a and el feloos. I don't know where to begin from, but don't you agree with me that ppl made this to themselves? They didn't stand up and say NO, and those who did were hurt one way or the other, which made the rest khayfeen, so they stopped saying NO and left everything and became nuetral, not even negative.
Ya3ni this is what I simply think.

Hi Philippe.

Am a very silent member but your topic motivated me to reply.
Am Egyptian and I love Egypt although I was born in Germany and I live in Germany all my life. I read alot about privatization in Egypt but believe me Egypt is in such a dilemma because we have to many state owned companies. A state owned company, lets say Omar Efendi, has only the aim to have a huge employee base. Ya3nie state owned companies dont care if they make profits or not as long as they let people work. And that is a very big problem because all state companies prefer to hire people instead of investing in new machinery, assets, etc thats why for example our textile industry is so weak compared to turkey and china simply bec it belonged to the state and the state has no money to expand or to make any profit oriented businesses. So it might sounds bad but privatisation is the only key to get inflows into country. Of course it would be better if more Egyptians would buy those companies insteadof arabs and foreigner. I am not a friend of Mubarak or anyone but I think we should give them a little chance bec the new ministers are really doing some efforts. Yes poor people dont feel it. Cooperate taxes decreased which is great because companies now have higher profits and higher profits means more expanding and more expanding means more work and more work means less unemployment. It is a cyrcle and the most important thing is that we Egyptians have to take part in this cycle. I mean look in Germany for example. We have 4 mobile operator. Only one is German and the rest is foreign. This is a normal thing and if Egyptian companies get competitors from outside then automatically they HAVE to improve their products, service, sales and quality. In Egypt we have 2 mobile operators and one of them is Egyptian (Mobinil) and the other vodafone is 46% Egyptian because Telecom Egypt owns 46%. So yes we have a huge dilemma in Egypt but it is in our hands to change it. I also hear those taxi driver stories( I have no car in Cairo thats why i use many taxis) but the problem is also that so many Egyptians are not ready or interested in improving their life. They say "alhamdulla" but they never have a vision in reaching higher goals. U have a lotpotential but we must use them. Foreigner buy Egyptian companies because they feel the potential so Yalla ba2a let us do something for Egypt. Open your private business. If each of us in this group would support one poor to make for example computer courses so that he might find a job then we can say we made something. I support friends in "zeitun ( a working area in cairo)" I motivate them and sent them to computer courses and at least they work now. It is a step.Egypt needs us and especially those who have money should change something.
All we hear is "El 7okuma 7arameya..." Come on guys Turkey, China, Brazil they are all corrupt but at least their ppl try to develop them selve. Again we have everything in our hands
Sorry for this long email:)
yours mo

philip.
u r a typicall example for those who give up easily!
I myself have three young friends in egypt who are really poor. poor and lazy guys. if you give them a task then they will stop being lazy. if they stop being lazy then they find a job even if it is not paid good but at least they can support their families. "mesh la2yeeb yaklo" is the wrong way to solve our problems. if you give up their hope then u give up their life. if u have enough money then support one family. let their kids go to schools or study. education is the key and at least it will reduce the risk for them to take drugs or hang arround and doing bullshit!
so philip as long as we live, then we have to work to develop ourselve!

Hi Fellow posters..

I am an Economics student but also a realist we 3arfa very well that what we read in books and what real life is like can be quite differnt....

I wished Egypt was one of these developing countries with a lot of 'get up and go' attitude that China and many other underdeveloped countries demonstrated in the recent past.  But  unfortunately this is not the case..

Privatisation is an easy - very easy way out for the government to deal with economical issues internally.  The govevernt in Eg is basically doing it for 2 obvious reason. To bring in income for itself after which (HOPEFULLY) they will invest in skills and developing the nations.  Secondly to bring effeciency and profitablity to the otherwise unprofitable sectors in the economy.. The aim is to compete internationally and become more at an international level with overseas competitors.

The only problem is that the government is throwing everyone in the deep end with no life jacket.  Merciless economics really, but it will work .. it will be painful but will give them results..

I wish they invest what funds are brought in from the sales of these sectors into skill building AND RETAINING.. its not a secret that so many wonderful geniuses that egypt has produced like doctors architects and engineers have chosen to live abroad for obvious reasons.. leaving the skillful work force depleted and struggling to lift up the game in the country.
