Subject: [Nic-employees-list] URGENT: Actions needed to protect ransomware due to Microsoft Vulnerability

This advisiory is being sent with the approval of HoG, Cyber Security Group.

Advisiory: Wanacrypt ransomware Attack

Computers around the world running earlier versions of Windows such as Windows XP (from 2001…) and Windows Server 2003 were impacted by a malicious vulnerability called ‘Wanacrypt’. Experts have determined the malicious code takes control of the computer and encrypts all the data on the hard drive. It then requires payment using Bitcoin to get access back to the computer.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 - Critical

The systems which are not patched as per the Security Bulletin MS17-010 are vulnerable to malicious attacks.

Please visit the following location for patches of old Microsoft Operating Systems.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/msrc/2017/05/12/customer-guidance-for-wannacrypt-attacks/

Microsoft Security Update for patches of the supported Operating Systems:

MS17-010 Security Update: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx

Measures were taken till now by NIC:

  • Security measures were taken at the Gateway routers, Perimeter Security Devices like firewalls, Intrusion Prevention Systems, Multi-Function Security Appliances.
  • Signatures updated including emergency signatures released by Anti-Virus OEMs like TrendMicro, Symantec, and McAfee.
  • Host-based Firewalls are configured to block vulnerable ports.
System Administrators and Network Administrators are advised to Patch all their systems immediately including old Microsoft Operating Systems if any, from the appropriate links provided above. Alternatively, administrators can run 'Windows Update' on their systems and ensure that all patches deployed successfully. They must ensure that Anti-Virus software is up and running on the systems of their administrative control. Also, all users are advised tobe cautious about unsolicited attachments.

This mail may be forwarded to all user departments including State Governments.
