Hi Jamie,

Welcome to JP! Unfortunately I am no longer living in Boston. I'm connecting you here with a few neighbors who are involved in the community orchard. Hopefully they can give you an update on the state of the compost system there.

Hello there!
We recently moved to JP and are very close to the community orchard and have seen the composter in the garden. We are figuring out the best way to compost here and are wondering whether the receptacle in the orchard is in working order and whether it is appropriate for members of the community to use it! Would love to hear more about it. Thank you!

Hi Jamie
The large compost bin at the back was donated and needs some work to be usable. We do have another composter on site but only do non food items due to problems with rats. Would you be up for helping repair the large new composter and get it working again?

Let me know and we can take steps to move it forward.

Hi Jamie,
The tumbler composter in the back has a hole that needs to be patched - this could be done with a drill and screws and a piece of solid plastic to make sure the food doesn't fall out. It also needs to be positioned on flat ground (not our rocks as it is currently parched) and would ideally replace the existing compost bin (and that might require some shoveling to move the existing one) so as not to be an eyesore as it is now.

It would be amazing if you and your husband wanted to take any of that on. So far this year a number of neighbors have adopted some task (weeding the front fence and pruning the entrance way, watering the new tree, planting some veggies, maintaining the playhouse, weeding invasive plants from the polycultures, etc) and been doing them sporadically when we get the time. We had one neighborhood meeting for folks to meet in person, and would like to have another one in August - it would be great if you could be there, are there weekends available in your schedule? Meeting Saturday mornings, 10am, is often a good slot.

Best,
Orion

Hi Hannah!
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I think we would be willing to help out with that! Do you know the extent of the repairs needed and what supplies would need to be obtained? I’ve cc’ed my husband here as well as he is definitely the more handy of the two of us:).
