Do you know the smell of burning plastic and human flesh?
It is a lot similar to that of the asphalt and rubber mix that clouds
the air as the metal bird lands.
The bird stood in one place, ruffling her feathers and heaved a sigh
of relief as her heavy load was removed. It had been another long
flight.
Hungry and weary, she was a tired mess in desperate need for sleep.
Then, she heard him: ‘beep-BEEP-beep’ it was music to her ears, he had
come to take her home. He smiled that grey smile of his, the orange
hat blinking to a rhythm. He hooked his arm to hers and dragged her
into their haven, dancing to the tune of his ‘beep-BEEP-beep’. At that
moment, she didn’t see the world it was just him and her in their cave
of love. Here she was cleaned, fed and put to rest while he just stood
back and waited to help her on the tarmac again. Slowly the day caught
up with her, as her eyes drooped in slumber she dozed off with the
image of his smile in her mind and her ears still echoing with his
‘beep-BEEP-beep’.
She was in the air again. Her relationship with the Wind of the West
was a love hate one. Today they were hating each other and this time
the Wind was winning. It threw her around like a twig so powerfully,
she could feel her loss of control. And then, sheer pain. That
thankless beast had ripped her wing off. Her screams were drowned in
the thunder and the air. As she felt her limb fall off she screamed
and screamed as she saw it disappear into the mist below. Handicapped
and helpless, she gave up her battle and embraced the darkness as she
slowly plunged down... Down… Down…
“Meow!”
She awoke with a start. The nightmare would never leave her and now
the black cat pawing her sides. This couldn’t be a good omen. Her eyes
searched for him and almost got blurry when they didn’t find him. But
then she heard his arrival, ‘beep-BEEP-beep’. He was here, all was
okay, life will be good.
Her happiness and relief was only short lived, for then she heard
their words, “Open the gates for the tow-truck we have to take this
737 to the scrap yard.
