Hello,

I dug up my old eggbot for easter, however it seems to have died on me somehow :(

I am running the following setting:
- Windows 8.1 with inkscape 0.48
- Eggbot version 1.4 (double checked to be sure)
- Eggbot on putty replies with:
EBBv13_and_above EB Firmware Version 2.1.5
Eggbot flashes 1Hz with a green light.

At this point I am pretty sure the stuff does work and I can get an connection, however... I cant seem to connect the darn thing in inkscape, and it finds my anger point by replying me some sort of error message like "Cannot connect, you are screwed, goodbye". Pretty sure its an inkscape issue because it ran fine when I last put it in the box, connection on putty does seem to work properly and the onliest thing I didnt put in that box was my computer.

Anyone who can help me? I am getting pretty tired of getting it back in a working state again...

Julius

Hi Julius,
I'm sorry to hear about the problem.

The actual error message that you are seeing is likely "Unable to find an Eggbot on any serial port. :(" I, personally, don't think that this sounds anything like "you are screwed." If you would like to suggest a different phrasing, please do. Our intent is certainly not to anger you, nor to create the impression that the situation is hopeless. In the vast majority of cases where people see that message, it genuinely is because the USB cable is not plugged in.

That said, the situation that you are describing -- where the Eggbot hardware is working, but yet it cannot connect through Inkscape -- is rare. The most likely situation is that something "unusual" on your computer is blocking access to the serial port. That could be as simple as leaving a putty connection open, it could be anti-viral/malware software on your computer blocking ports, it could be other USB devices, especially ones that take special drivers. (We have seen cases where uncommon USB devices have caused conflicts.) Can you think of anything that might be causing an issue of that type?

We have also on occasion heard of intermittent problems due to USB cable or hub issues. These have sometimes presented as Eggbots that show up in the device manager, but can't connect from Inkscape, or which print for a while and then stop. If you have a different USB cable that you can try (or if you are using a hub or extension) you might try to see if anything makes a difference.

Hello,

I purchased a new Eggbot Ostrich but I am having trouble connecting the Eggbot to the computer.   I am seeing this error "Failed to connect to EggBot. :("
It is not the "Unable to find an Eggbot on any serial port. :("  error.  I saw that too and resolved it but now I am seeing the  "Failed to connect to EggBot. :(" error any time I try to apply anything in the Eggbot controller interface.

Thank you for any help you can provide,

Scott Hill

I'll note that we're also discussing this here:
http://forum.evilmadscientist.com/discussion/647/

(The old error message "Unable to find an Eggbot on any serial port" was changed to read "Failed to connect to EggBot" because of the discussion that you're replying to here.)
