Talk with a government official faster
Accessing government officials on time, getting state information fast, is a service most Kenyans yearn for.
And now there is a solution. A project named Government Unified Communication System will ensure that your calls get picked on time by the right person, and information is relayed to you speedily. In the project, run through the Kenya ICT Board, 37 government offices will be issued with a total of 10,438 Telephony Endpoints, by December this year.

The Government will also get to explore different ways to reach users in case they cannot be reached on the phone especially during emergency situations.
Officials will be trained on the use of the devices beforehand.

Cybersecurity Framework in four months
How safe is your information in the technology era? The truth is we leave our data everywhere. Government offices, mobile telephony companies, the Internet, in companies we have worked for, name it, and it's likely that we will have left a trail of ourselves.
In answering to this and more, the government is already developing a Cyber Security Master plan, aimed at establishing a regulatory and policy framework in information security.
The project, run through the Ministry of Information and Communications, commenced this August 2012 and will see to the confidentiality, Integrity, availability and non-repudiation of online data.
It's projected that once implemented the policies and regulations will instill confidence in online transactions, thus boosting local and international trade. It is also meant to aide security apparatus prosecute cases of online crime.
Through a USTDA grant of US$580,000, the contractor Booz Allen Hamilton is expected to have the master plan ready in the next four months.Once ready, the master plan will be presented to the various stakeholders for review and possible implementation.

IT graduates to get relevant skills in fresh drive
Kenya adds thousands of IT graduates each year, but they are most likely to go jobless because they lack of relevant practical skills.
But a new course promises to reverse all that. The Software Developer Certification
(SDC), being developed by Carnegie Mellon University in conjunction with the The Kenya ICT Board, will be testing the course exam starting this month. Dubbed 'Chipuka', a Swahili word meaning 'to emerge or to spring forth', the course pilot will be launched in April 2013 and will help employers identify software developers with the skills necessary to step into jobs
immediately. The certification should be fully operational in Kenya by October 2013. The exam will be tested on 30 volunteers drawn from KENET (Kenya Education Network) and Skunkworks and feedback will aid the course developers in producing a more focused and productive exam.

Free Open data training
Have you ever wondered how the open data portal works? Or how you can use the portal to your advantage?
The team has been holding classes of 10 people each since 27th July. The classes drawn from members of the private sector, civil society and academia are expected to increase the usability of the online Portal www.opendata.go.ke both in data access and use.
Those who participate expect to gain a better understanding of the portal, available data sets and data analysis tools. The one hour training on Fridays, at Kenya ICT board offices will help recipients tell their story differently while utilizing the uploaded data. So far the turnout has been above board and the classes will draw to a close once the demand eases.
