The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Farm Technical Officer who will have day to day oversight of farm operations relating to the delivery of the Advanced Training courses based at Agricutural Training College- Bukura. He/she will also have responsibility for the organisation of teaching and practical classes and be expected to contribute to practicum teaching and student oversight.

ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. www.ilri.org

ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700 and in 2015 an annual operating budget of USD 83 million. A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa and in South, Southeast and East Asia. www.cgiar.org

Responsibilities

  • Day to day responsibility for project management
  • Oversight of day to day farm operations including milking and paddock work
  • Be responsible for livestock feed ration formulation
  • Provide oversight and guidance to farm staff
  • Maintain staff records
  • Maintain accurate records of farm inputs
  • Manage the farm and feed budget
  • Co-ordinate training tutorials, including the development of course scheduling

Requirements

  • BSc degree in Agricultural Sciences or related field;
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic budget management and recording
  • Demonstrated experience in providing training to communities related to livestock nutrition
  • Demonstrated experience in farm supervision and management of staff
  • Demonstrated active leadership skills in a commercial setting
  • Ability to work independently to achieve project goals
  • At least 2 years work experience working in farm or livestock related industries
  • Experience in working with livestock, especially ruminants
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel- MS Office suite
  • Experience in conducting training programs
  • Experience in staff support and oversight

Post location: The position is based Kakamega County

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 1 year fixed term.

  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated understanding of social impacts of livestock development including gender equity
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in group facilitation and direct teaching
  • Demonstrated experience in leading group based learning

Responsibilities

Logistics

  • Coordinate local and international travel for; fellows, consultants, visitors and staff.
  • Organize for airport transfers with ILRI travel agency or any other entity as may be deemed necessary.
  • Organize meetings, seminars and send material to various partners and collaborators.
  • Provide logistics support towards workshops (travel and accommodation of workshop participants) organize for meeting rooms, travel itineraries, visas, workshop material ground transport, hotel rooms etc.
  • Raising purchase orders for office and laboratory supplies and oversee the delivery and distribution.
  • Establish and maintain a key contact database and email list, including all principal investigators partner and other stakeholders.

Project staff Support

  • Prepare Travel Authorization, ensuring that the correct per diem rates have been included and requesting finance office for any travel advance required.
  • Organize for travel reimbursement and prepare travel expenses report (where applicable).
  • Prepare payment requests and Compile recharges for services provided and share with relevant staff.
  • Maintain accurate records and computer database file systems and databases for program documentations including progress and final reports for visiting scientists, research fellows and students.
  • Take minutes of program meetings.

Main office support

  • Schedule induction training in liaison with the country IITA office.
  • Work in liaison with ICT to set up emails or where applicable ensure the necessary ICT equipment is availed for the project staff and visitors.
  • Support the IITA country office in preparing and follow-ups on national and international consultants contracts.

Other

  • Provide other general administrative support as may be required.

Requirements:

  • Diploma in Business Administration or other related field.
  • Atleast 2 years’ experience in providing Administrative support and office management services in a busy multicultural international environment.
  • Highly effective multitasking skills with ability to coordinate prioritize and organize workload.
  • Good communication skills with excellent writing skills.
  • Effective organizational skills, good judgment and work under minimum supervision.
  • Close attention to details, accuracy and completeness of work.
  • Take personal responsibility for job performance, maintain confidentiality and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.

Post location: The position is based in ILRI Nairobi, Kenya.
