Dear Friends ,

Hope this email finds you well  and call on all young people across the world to join our sisters celebrate this important day which is  very remarkable for Gender Equality being one of our Top Priorities for Post -2015 UN Development Agenda. Please read the historical background below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5axIvjAFuMw&feature=plcp

The Day of the Girl is about highlighting, celebrating, discussing, and advancinggirls lives and opportunities across the globe. When girls come together to talk about what really matters to us, we can teach other people–grownups, boys, girls all across the world–a new way of thinking about issues like gender stereotypes, discrimination, and opportunity. October 11 is not just a day but a movement. 10.11.12 is bigger than one issue, one organization, or even one country.

This successful campaign to establish the United Nations International Day of the Girl was led in the US by School Girls Unite, an organization of students and young women leaders determined to advance the UN Millennium Development Goals related to gender equality and universal basic education, and other human rights issues.
Our mission mirrors the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of the Girl Child, approved on December 19, 2011:

“To help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”

We are encouraging girls in towns and cities across America to participate in our Day of the Girl Proclamation Project. These official declarations will spread awareness about this new girls’ rights day that will be celebrated each year on October 11. Our nonprofit organization, located in Washington, DC, is eager to help individual girls, schools and community organizations pursue local proclamations as well as other events for 10.11.12.

THANKS

We are grateful to Plan International and other organizations in nearly 100 countries that mobilized support for the UN Resolution. In America, we appreciate thousands of supporters who signed our petition and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Shout out toiTwixie.com and Sage Girl for their passionate hard work on the Virtual Summit!
