Subject: Next YearThe letters have gone out showing the schedule for next year. When we were at NFA last week we got to see some of you on the lists but not everyone plus I know that their will be some scheduling changes.I thought we could all post our dates for next year's EAFSOEM class like we did this year.Matt, Neal, Jake and I are scheduled for September 20th, 2010. The list for that week also included Darrell, Tim M., Tim P., and Mike Jackson.Just 2 more years to go!!!!

I’m scheduled for May 17 – 28 but thinking hard about requesting Angie to move me to July or September. Since the “Gloved One” is getting married in early May, that is a lot for a old guy to process in one month! Anyone from this group scheduled for May?

At least your exhile was for 24 hours, not the 2 weeks we have been given. My room is so hot I had to buy a fan to help keep cool at night.
To one and all:
>From all of us here for our second installation, Scott, Mark, David,
Craig and Darrell (PS. Yesterday was Darrell's 40th B-Day) what did you
guys do in the last class? The instructors have warned us not to get
out of control, and that they had problems with the last
class........hmmmmmmm.........Jodie?
Be safe

You poor souls must have been stuck with some goobers from the other classes. Our group was pretty laid back and our visits from Chuck were very cordial. We did hear of someone getting tossed in their last year for plagiarism and Chuck was really serious about that subject. I personally spoke to Mary Marchone and Laurie the intern about the progress of the program and future changes and neither alluded to any concerns at that time. When they opened L block the gremlins got out. Scott, maybe you should go to Walmart and buy the instructors a nice gift 8^)
More Fun Today,
This morning we had the opportunity to stand in the hallway and wait to enter the classroom until we had a discussion with two (unnamed) academy officials. Whatever you did sure had an impact.
Thanks.
So I was cleaning out my e-mail and realized I have not heard from anyone an quite a while. Everyone still doing ok? Hope everyone is well.

Scott,
Wow…..Max, I’m sorry, but hang in there.
Cost cutting:
We have been “creatively” cutting costs also…..
Silly things like newspaper subscriptions for all our stations. No more.
Incentive programs for various certs…..cut
Utilities, we all have made a real effort to reduce fuel use, electric bills etc.
I know, small stuff, but enough of it starts to add up to real money and helps save jobs.
Greetings all! We have not seen such bad times in Texarkana, just no increases in budget. In fact, one guy returning from extended military leave will put us one over until somebody leaves. We are quite fortunate in this region of the country and have not felt the financial or unemployment crisis that many are going through right now. Texas in general has faired well so far, and east Texas has done far better than the rest of the state.
I also got a promotion of sorts. Our department does not have an Assistant Chief, but I have been given an assignment of “Coordinator of Operations”. It’s a little more money for a lot more responsibility. But it’s a good step for me and a welcomed responsibility. It has been a needed position for a long time in our department.
And to fill ya’ll in on me—as most of you know I requested and was granted a year’s leave from EFO. But even after receiving that bit of mercy from NFA, my eldest son’s cancer (desmoplastic small round cell tumor—DSRCT) returned in June. He will be in for a long battle for the second time. He had an 8 hour surgery at MD Anderson about two months ago. That was followed immediately with radiation and then (and currently) chemotherapy. Another surgery is expected in early December (if everything goes well) to remove part of his liver. With so much going on, I doubt I’ll be able to continue in the EFO program. I will wait a bit later to put in my resignation, but I seriously doubt my ability to continue. If so inclined, keep him in your prayers.
Regardless, I wanted to thank all of you for a great class and for your support along the way.

A lot of the same here in AL. We luckily have not experienced any layoffs; however the city did put a salary freeze on everyone for the next year, no merit raises, cost of living raises, or promotions. But I guess it could be worse.
Steve, congrats on the promotion and your family will be in my prayers.
Everyone take care and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

Scott,
Not sure if you are kidding around or not. . .Our class was strange but nothing happened that I know of would result in those kinds of statements! There are a load of students spread out across 4 years, so anything could be or have been going on. . .And it could be an evil experiment by the "administration," LOL! And those accusations are very generalized if you ask me. . .Maybe it is because they let Canadians in. . .

So explain this: Our class president was pulled out of class by Chuck today and came back, asked the instructors to leave the class and explained that the concern from the academy was that the EFO program was not on track as it should be....ie.....class and out of class conduct. WTF?
Our class of 13 is walking on eggshells worried about what has happened.......

| All is well in Kansas and Missouri. The lovely folks at ICMA are trying to solve everyone's budget problems by suggesting 12 hour shifts (so we're productive and not sleeping), eliminating Battalion Chiefs and making Captains Shift Commanders, reassigning the existing Captains to Lieutenants and promoting Lieutenants to fill the Company Officer positions, yada yada yada... The good news is I'm still gainfully employed! |

Steve,
Sorry to hear about your son. He definitely is in our prayers. The rest of your family as well as it must be hard on all of you as your work through this time.
Congratulations on the promotion.
The fire districts in Arizona have faired ok so far but the next couple of years will be very challenging for many of the Districts. Our District used the good times to plan for the down turn and paid off debt and planned for a possible down turn which is now here. Hopefully this will get us through the next couple of years.
If anyone wants to know how to handle an MCI in a sweat lodge just call as we had on in our District last month. You never know where these types of incidents are coming from. Who ever thought they would put that many people in that type of a structure.
Steve, please stay in touch, even if you don’t continue in the EFOP.
Jerry
