Hi Everyone,

The letters have gone out showing the schedule for next year. When we were at NFA last week we got to see some of you on the lists but not everyone plus I know that their will be some scheduling changes.

I thought we could all post our dates for next year's EAFSOEM class like we did this year.

Matt, Neal, Jake and I are scheduled for September 20th, 2010. The list for that week also included Darrell, Tim M., Tim P., and Mike Jackson.

Just 2 more years to go!!!!

Hi Gwen,

As the sole remaining member of the Oak Leaf Club, I am sad to hear
that you are withdrawing from the EFOP.

It was a pleasure attending class with you last year! Your talent,
sense of humour, and professional approach were a great asset for our
cohort, and I believe that the department you represent is one of the
leading departments in Canada and North America.

Stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Darrell

Yes, I am afraid Wayne is right. I got sent off for 24 hours of solitary in "L Block" on my first night. But I got an early release back to "C" for good behavior I. I guess they didn't want to send anyone from housekeeping over for just my one room. But, don't worry... I killed all of the cockroaches that I found, hopefully there is not many left.

Michael,
You are entirely too modest! There was a bouncer at the door of L block when he took Sal, Jerry, and me over to see his cubicle. It even had a desk that would fold down when you shut the door. The only thing missing from this splendid housing was the matching stainless steel sink and toilet. Man, were we jealous! His early release was actually a promotion to warden of C bldg. He even left his hat and glove (pink with glitter) in the classroom so he wouldn't be recognized. Right out of Thriller. If only someone could download the class video...

Hey..... All I have to say is be lucky that you aren't in D building! Matt and I were both attacked by TVs while we were in the bathroom. (different rooms, different times by the way). We were lucky to survive.

I thought the instructors loved us! I was on my best behavior. The real issue was Table #2, they were weird, boring and a bunch of yes men! Ooops, was that in my out loud voice? We really missed you guys, no one argued at all so I really missed you Scott! I can't wait til next year.

Have a great time,

Scott,

Not sure if you are kidding around or not. . .Our class was strange but nothing happened that I know of would result in those kinds of statements!  There are a load of students spread out across 4 years, so anything could be or have been going on. . .And it could be an evil experiment by the "administration," LOL!  And those accusations are very generalized if you ask me. . .Maybe it is because they let Canadians in. . .

Hmmm I don't know of anything that happened while we were there. Typical NFA stuff, a few nights at Ott house, hanging at the pub, no crazy drunken behavior that I know of. We had a small class too, only 14.

The guy I work with said that they had a weird thing like that happen when he attended in May. Something about one of the students slamming the whole program during the evaluations.

Man, it's only tuesday, what did you guys do?

You poor souls must have been stuck with some goobers from the other classes. Our group was pretty laid back and our visits from Chuck were very cordial. We did hear of someone getting tossed in their last year for plagiarism and Chuck was really serious about that subject. I personally spoke to Mary Marchone and Laurie the intern about the progress of the program and future changes and neither alluded to any concerns at that time. When they opened L block the gremlins got out. Scott, maybe you should go to Walmart and buy the instructors a nice gift 8^)

Good to hear from you.  An update from the Pacific Northwest:
Our department will be announcing lay-offs next week.  We have already closed a station and it appears we will be closing another one and looking at 40 positions being laid-off.  Our county went from being the fastest growing county in the state to the highest unemployment in the state now.  18% budget deficit this year.  Morale is down and everyone is on pins and needles.  No outside training next year.  However, I was told that since I am in the EFO process, they will allow me to continue.  That is if I have a job.

Other than that, life is splendid!!  Can't wait for next years class!!

If anyone has any cost cutting ideas, throw them my way please.  We are having another meeting this week and any help would be appreciated!!

Max Konkright

News sounds very similar all over. In Two Rivers, the impact has not
been as bad. We are looking at wage reductions and insurance changes
across the city to balance the budget. As you said, moral is very low
and there is a great deal of frustration. with our department of 19 full
time, we are also looking at 2 retirements next year. We have all ready
been told these position will be held open, for now and not eliminated.

Otherwise, the work continues. I hope the projects are all still in
perspective.

Good to hear from you. An update from the Pacific Northwest:
Our department will be announcing lay-offs next week. We have already
closed a station and it appears we will be closing another one and
looking at 40 positions being laid-off. Our county went from being the
fastest growing county in the state to the highest unemployment in the
state now. 18% budget deficit this year. Morale is down and everyone
is on pins and needles. No outside training next year. However, I was
told that since I am in the EFO process, they will allow me to continue.
That is if I have a job.

Other than that, life is splendid!! Can't wait for next years class!!

If anyone has any cost cutting ideas, throw them my way please. We are
having another meeting this week and any help would be appreciated!!

Scott,

Not sure if you are kidding around or not. . .Our class was strange but
nothing happened that I know of would result in those kinds of
statements! There are a load of students spread out across 4 years, so
anything could be or have been going on. . .And it could be an evil
experiment by the "administration," LOL! And those accusations are very
generalized if you ask me. . .Maybe it is because they let Canadians in.

Wow…..Max,  I’m sorry, but hang in there.

Cost cutting:

We have been “creatively” cutting costs also…..

Silly things like newspaper subscriptions for all our stations.  No more.

Incentive programs for various certs…..cut

Utilities, we all have made a real effort to reduce fuel use, electric bills etc.

I know, small stuff, but enough of it starts to add up to real money and helps save jobs.

Greetings all!  We have not seen such bad times in Texarkana, just no increases in budget.  In fact, one guy returning from extended military leave will put us one over until somebody leaves.  We are quite fortunate in this region of the country and have not felt the financial or unemployment crisis that many are going through right now.  Texas in general has faired well so far, and east Texas has done far better than the rest of the state.

I also got a promotion of sorts.  Our department does not have an Assistant Chief, but I have been given an assignment of “Coordinator of Operations”.  It’s a little more money for a lot more responsibility.  But it’s a good step for me and a welcomed responsibility.  It has been a needed position for a long time in our department.

And to fill ya’ll in on me—as most of you know I requested and was granted a year’s leave from EFO.  But even after receiving that bit of mercy from NFA, my eldest son’s cancer (desmoplastic small round cell tumor—DSRCT) returned in June.  He will be in for a long battle for the second time.  He had an 8 hour surgery at MD Anderson about two months ago.  That was followed immediately with radiation and then (and currently) chemotherapy.  Another surgery is expected in early December (if everything goes well) to remove part of his liver.  With so much going on, I doubt I’ll be able to continue in the EFO program.  I will wait a bit later to put in my resignation, but I seriously doubt my ability to continue.  If so inclined, keep him in your prayers.

Regardless, I wanted to thank all of you for a great class and for your support along the way.

Hi Everyone,

It has definetly been a while since we all checked in, thanks for reminding us Scott.

We are doing well budget wise up here, the training money that departments are getting through AFG has really kept us busy.

We finally got our first snow this week and it is about 13 degrees right now.

Stay safe and warm!

A lot of the same here in AL. We luckily have not experienced any layoffs; however the city did put a salary freeze on everyone for the next year, no merit raises, cost of living raises, or promotions. But I guess it could be worse.

All is well in Kansas and Missouri. The lovely folks at ICMA are trying to solve everyone's budget problems by suggesting 12 hour shifts (so we're productive and not sleeping), eliminating Battalion Chiefs and making Captains Shift Commanders, reassigning the existing Captains to Lieutenants and promoting Lieutenants to fill the Company Officer positions, yada yada yada...  The good news is I'm still gainfully employed!

Steve,

Sorry to hear about your son.  He definitely is in our prayers.  The rest of your family as well as it must be hard on all of you as your work through this time.

Congratulations on the promotion.

The fire districts in Arizona have faired ok so far but the next couple of years will be very challenging for many of the Districts.  Our District used the good times to plan for the down turn and paid off debt and planned for a possible down turn which is now here.  Hopefully this will get us through the next couple of years.

If anyone wants to know how to handle an MCI in a sweat lodge just call as we had on in our District last month.  You never know where these types of incidents are coming from.  Who ever thought they would put that many people in that type of a structure.

Steve, please stay in touch, even if you don’t continue in the EFOP.

Jerry
