My name is Darrell Reid, and I am the Fire Chief of Strathcona County Emergency Services, in Alberta, Canada. As a component of my studies in the United States Fire Administration / National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, I have undertaken an Applied Research Project titled "From Reactive to Proactive: Incorporating Social Marketing Strategies to Facilitate Adoption of the FireSmart Program within the Strathcona County Wildland Interface."
In support of my research, I am asking representatives from the Fire Service in Canada and the United States for their perspectives on their department's role in the marketing and implementation of wildfire management programs. I am also collecting data on general fire department perceptions of wildfire mitigation and prevention programs such as FireSmart (Canada) or Firewise (U.S.), the barriers to adoption of these programs, and potential incentives which could increase their adoption.
Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey. It is estimated that the survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

I have a request as well. My ARP relates to Pandemic response and I am looking for agency policies and procedures that relate to Pandemic/Epidemic operations as well as public education programs. If any of your agencies have them I would really appreciate a copy. If your agency does not have any procedures or if you rely on another agency to handle all or part of this I would appreciate a short note stating so.

Survey done. Funny we are doing almost the same project. I am doing a
comparison of NFPA 1144 and ICC International Wildland Urban Interface
Code (2006) version. My department is looking at trying to adopt one or
the other. Lots of financial impacts on our customers.

We are in the process of revising our Pandemic Plan for Strathcona County, and I will forward the final to you asap. In the meantime, our Provincial plan (and a summary of the plan) is available at http://www.health.alberta.ca/documents/APIP-Summary-Oct-2009.pdf
There is also a link to the Canadian national plan at this site, and to the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, who assist municipalities with plans.
