thanks for reporting. in the future, please use plain/text rather than

I will investigate (will need to get my hands on the hardware
documentation to make sure it is ok to program the watchdog without
getting/clearing the status flag)

Your mileage may vary from one device/driver to another. Not all
watchdog implementations may provide that information reliably (in
other words, while we may be able to fix this issue for BX-21A, other
devices may not support this bootstatus file)
