There were concerns in the "Improved customer service" thread in the
ASEM forum, that the Windows Updater may be using source code that is
under GPL and therefor ASEM would have to publish their source code.
Of course, this post didn't last long there, but it would still be
interesting if that's true. Does anybody know anything about this?
Just being curious.

I don't know anything specific about the Windoze installer since I run
Os X, but .... given the level of "secrecy" they like entertaining
around their "firmware", I suspect all the code in there may not be
entirely ... hum ... proprietary ? ;-)

Gotcha ;-)

Interesting enough that nobody tried to reverse engineer the device. I
mean ASEM is almost asking for it.

If things are keeping going that way, meaning, firwmare screwed up and
no fix in sight, I'm probably going to do one of two things :

- Buy a Mac pro and rev eng the efix stuff or
- install a boot132 retail version and rev eng the efix stuff :-)

My guess is that I'm going to find a "neutered" version of the boot132
thing with a splash screen and the ISOLINUX messages stripped down ...
just a guess ... :-)

Probably yes. I also decided that I'll keep the EFi-X as long as I
personally have no problems with it (which is the case until now).
When the moment comes that I would have to "send my unit to the lab",
that will be the moment when I'll try to switch to boot123. Actually
the reason why I bought EFi-X was because I was disapointed by Apples
last Mac Pro update.

O Lucky One :-) I wish I had no problems right now :-)

I didn't like that much the MacPro update (at the time I bought the
Efi-x), right now, with the introduction of the new Intel cpu's, it
does sound interesting. Of course you have to fork much more $$$ if
you want the beefed up version with the 3Ghz cores ... but in the end,
I guess you only get what you pay for ... and peace of mind is not
cheap :-)

Right now I have a mostly unusable machine, my only network connection
being through an usb adapter and I lack the dual Gb bandwidth I used
to have 2 weeks ago ...

Price.

Not only the price. The Price of the 8-core machine is out of reach
for me, but that's ok because I can live with 4-cores. But what you
get for the price of the 4-core (which isn't really a bargain as well)
is not very much. You'll get a baseline CPU which costs a few hudreds
of dollar (Xeon 3500). You'll get - I don't know - maybe 2 GB of RAM
wich you can upgrade to merely 8 GB. This doesn't sound like a
Professinal Workstation to me anymore. And I really needed to replace
my G5 before Snow Leopard ;-)

Bite the bullet and get a G5 you will be happy. Who cares about
payments. Do you want to live with the regret you have, forever? Buy
one on ebay. McLovin
