New Arrivals: On June 27 jaguar Annie gave birth to two cubs, a male we named "Nadar" and a female "Myress". Mom is doing a great job of raising them. They are not in the display area, but come to our September 15 Twilight Tour for a chance to see them!

We are also home to a young, 18-24 month old male cougar (aka mountain lion) we've named "Serrano". He was captured in Orange County's Whiting Ranch park on July 17. Luckily our vet Dr. Scott Weldy was the one called by Fish & Game to assist in the capture, and brought him to us while F&G decides what to do in the long run. He does not appear to be a good candidate for re-release based on his behavior around humans; he never learned to avoid being seen by people. Cougars live with their mother for the first 12-18 months of their lives, and while mom is off hunting the cubs should be practicing their hunting skills themselves while their mom is still feeding them. When the mother kicks them out at 18-24 months of age, many of these young cats do not survive - either killed by older cats, hit by cars, or they starve to death. Cougars are shy animals and normally hide when humans are around, unlike this young guy. We are minimizing human contact for now but if he will remain here he will be moved to the display area.
