EFBC's Feline Conservation Center is proud to announce the birth of 3 black-footed cat kittens (
Felis nigripes) on June 10.
These tiny (2-5 pound) cats live in southern Africa. The yellow ball in
this photo is the size of a pingpong ball for scale, the kitten is 18
days old. The parents are Josephine and Mr. B, who had a single kitten last year as well. These cats live in an arid environment and can breed twice a year, with the kittens becoming independent at 5 months. The black-footed cat is one of the smallest cat species in the world and the smallest in Africa. The black-footed cat is nocturnal and solitary except for females with
dependent cubs, and during the mating season. It is active most of the
night and travels on average 8.4 km when it is searching for food.
During the day it is only rarely seen since it rests in rocky
crevices or close to the abandoned burrows of springhares, ground
squirrels, termites, or porcupines. (thanks to
