A product that contain variants is knowns as product master while a product without variants (Standalone item) is called a product. For example, we have a shirt available in different sizes and colors is a product master.

9) Once you open the item, add the mandatory fields like unit under Purchase , Sales and Inventory tab, item model group and item group and click on the Validate button under the Maintain and Maintain option is available under the Product tab in the action pane.

I want to know what is the difference and relation between product and product master. When to use product subtype product master and product.

I saw some sample code in the internet to create product master but i dont see any to create product.

Can someone guide me on this?

Product master should be used when item has variants, say color, size and configurations. When product master is created, you need to specify product dimension group. Product dimension group is nothing but the variant combinations.

HI Dev D, Product is uniquely identifiable but product master consist variants. You can specify product dimension group like color, size, configuration to product master but not for product because product has no variant. You can refer SCF Chapter 2 "Product information management" for more details.

One of my client's company uses DAX 2012 and have approximately 15.000 released product. Recently we discovered that the product dimension (size, color, etc) feature was not fully used and most of those products are released without any product dimension attached to it, resulting in duplication of products because of the supposed to be dimension variation are put into product code and product dimension, example :

My question is is that possible for us to add product dimension (size, flavor) to existing product master to create some product variants and 'deactivate' the duplicates to a bit cleanse the master product list?

from usage point of view, users may face bit difficulty with change of model from Product to Product Master as they might not be in a habit to choose dimensions at this moment; whereas with model they have to select dimensions (color, size etc.) with each transaction

It is not good idea to change the dimension group after long times. you can create new item with required dimension and proceed. If you are so keen in inventory transaction and integration with other model end to end, you can try but it will be very complex. there is no OOB functionality for same. Safer site please go with new creation.

There is no functional support for this. I would recommend to create new items to prevent other possilble problems. Data manipulation is not the way I woulf advice. The inventory posting is quitre difficult and easy to break with manual interference.

So product information management. We can either create this in release products which will automatically release it into this legal entity, or we'll go to product Masters and release it later. So we'll create a new product master.

Now the configuration technology determines how and when the product variants based on the current product master are configured. So predefined variants we specify those product variants. Now the other two options are configured when they are.

The product definition can be created in D365 Supply Chain Management. It can also be imported from product lifecycle management (PLM), product data management (PDM), or product information management (PIM) systems. When more than one instance of Supply Chain Management is used, one instance is typically used as the master of the product data for all other instances. This approach is supported by a large set of data entities that enable the export and import of product definition data from one instance to another.

To support the distribution of product data to many instances, Supply Chain Management lets you use Microsoft Dataverse. The product definitions can be exported from an instance of Supply Chain Management to Microsoft Dataverse. The product definitions can then be used to provision other business applications, such as Dynamics 365 Sales, with product data.

In an agile world, where products must be quickly adapted to customer requirements, product definitions specify a set of products instead of distinct products. In Supply Chain Management, those generic products are known as product masters. Product masters hold the definition and rules that specify how distinct products are described and behave in business processes. Based on these definitions, distinct products can be generated. These distinct products are known as product variants.

A product master is associated with a product dimension group and a configuration technology to specify the business rules. The product dimensions (Color, Size, Style, and Configuration) are a specific set of attributes that can be used throughout the application to define and track specific behaviors of the related products. These dimensions also help users search for and identify the products.

The Product variant model definition workspace gives an overview of the product masters. It also shows the status of the release of masters and related variants to specific legal entities.

The products that are released to a specific legal entity are known as released products. Products can be released in bulk to one legal entity or many legal entities at a time. Because various properties and attributes of the products might have to be added per legal entity, the Released product maintenance workspace lets you monitor and complete the recently released products in each legal entity, or in the suborganizations of a legal entity.

You can configure the Released product maintenance workspace from the Configure my workspace menu item. Select a category hierarchy and category to filter the workspace by. To adjust the relevant product data in the workspace, you can also define, in days, the time fences for Recently released products and Stopped released products.

Products where you need to keep track of versions and have an established change management process (especially products with BOMs or formulas) are often best set up as engineering products. Engineering products are changed managed, include version identifiers, and use change orders to keep track of the changes made between versions. If needed, you can choose to track the version used in each transaction (each version is a product variant).

1) The document discusses product information management in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. It describes how to define products, product masters, categories, attributes and pricing. 2) It provides guidance to Jonathan on determining whether items are products or services and how to create products, product masters, define variants, categories and attributes. 3) The key steps outlined include creating a product or product master, defining type and dimensions, releasing the product, assigning categories and attributes, and setting prices.Read less

Furthermore, we must think of these as the variant for each product when thinking about product dimensions. Therefore, these variants will belong to the product master (do not worry; we will deal with product information management very soon in our blog).

As such, once a product master is in place, you can associate a product dimension group to it. Moreover, this will allow you to create product dimensions for that particular product master. Therefore, these dimensions will work as a control mechanism for the variants of the product master. How Dynamics 365 handles this process goes as follows:

In this blogpost, we will specifically deal with tracking and inventory storage dimensions. Nevertheless, you must know that the method to associate these dimension groups to a product will vary depending on how they created the product. For example:

Think of tracking dimensions as mechanisms to ensure tracking, quality assurance, and warranties. Therefore, these mechanisms come in the form of serial, batch numbers, and ownership. Tracing will allow you to keep track of your products, essentially becoming a handy tool for quality assurance and dealing with warranties. For example, when it comes to certain items that present an inherent risk, such as chemicals, you can prevent losses and item recalls by tracing the items back to the production line, preventing defects. Moreover, think of a customer that had a complaint regarding a certain item. Nevertheless, unless you had accurate control of the dates of manufacturing and sale, you would not know how to deal with that situation.

Furthermore, when it comes to Dynamics 365, you will assign serial and batch numbers to an item. However, these are not mutually exclusive; you can assign both, either or none of them to an inventory item. Moreover, assigning a tracking dimension to an inventory item will be necessary for each product in your system, as it will be the mechanism allowing you to track the item throughout the manufacturing and sales process.

For batch numbers, not only do these apply to groups of items. Therefore, think of the following scenario. If you had a customer to which you sold a batch of products and later found out that these products had an issue, the batch number would issue a product recall to your customer. Moreover, you would be able to do so accurately; finding the specific products could have them back with a vendor return order.
