               Abstract

 Based on his experience as a Faculty at IIT Delhi for 42 years, Prof Murthy presents some issues and concerns to sustain, pursue and promote excellence in IIT System. Opportunities and threats to IITs need deliberation. Several new factors have come to play in recent years that may not permit “Business as Usual” approach. Increased number of students with reduced faculty is straining the system. How IITs compare with global benchmark? Are we world class? If not, how can we be? Can we diagnose the defects and take corrective actions?  Can we attempt out of box solutions? How do we promote inter-National, Inter- Institutions and Alumni Linkages expected of a world class institution? Can we improve support system to students and faculty to promote academics and reduce drudgery? What is the status of autonomy- academic, administrative and financial?  The talk introspects on these issues and throws some ideas for IITs to be among the global best.
