Dear all,

We are very happy to announce that EENPS has just launched a new blog, now available on our website: https://eenps.weebly.com/blog

The aim of this blog is to create a space that can foster mutual learning and help the wider philosophical community better understand the unique complexities of intellectual life in Central and Eastern Europe, both past and present

We warmly invite you to contribute.

What kind of contributions are we looking for?

We imagine these contributions as letters or reflective pieces written from the perspective of someone living and working in the region. They may be as personal, reflective, or historically informed as you wish, and as brief or as expansive as feels right to you. You are entirely free in tone and focus.

If it helps, here are a number of themes to keep in mind as you shape your piece:
  • Family background and formative circumstances, especially where they intersect with political contexts, regional histories, or ethnic tensions.
  • Economic or institutional difficulties, and how these pressures affected one’s well‑being, motivation, or sense of possibility.
  • Experiences connected to gender, ethnicity, or other identity‑related challenges, particularly where they reveal structural features of academic life in the region.
  • Institutional culture and academic pathways, including mentorship, departmental hierarchies, bureaucratic obstacles, or the lingering influence of older academic structures.
  • The intellectual climate and local philosophical traditions, such as the interplay between analytic and continental approaches, the availability of literature, or the role of translation and linguistic access in shaping one’s development.
  • Language and linguistic constraints, especially the experience of working in a multilingual environment or navigating an English‑dominated global discipline from a non‑English context.
  • The broader political atmosphere, including how current political conditions affect academic freedom, public engagement, or the social role of philosophers.
  • Teaching conditions and student culture, which often reveal the day‑to‑day realities of philosophical work in underfunded or rapidly changing institutions.
  • Professional isolation or community, whether in small departments, peripheral regions, or vibrant local networks, and how these contexts shape one’s sense of belonging.
  • Geographical context, including differences between working in large urban centres and smaller towns, and how these environments influence academic and intellectual life.
These are only suggestions. You are welcome to write about whatever aspects of your experience you find most important.

For those who prefer a more structured prompt

You may also choose to respond to the following questions:
  • What is your current role, and how did you get here?
  • Why did you become a philosopher of science?
  • What is your current project and how are you pursuing it?
  • Is your research affected by your location in Central and Eastern Europe?
  • Does practicing philosophy of science in this region present special challenges or opportunities?
  • What are your hopes for philosophy of science in your institution/city/country?
Feel free to skip any questions and expand on the ones that resonate with you.

How to contribute

If you would like to propose a piece, please contact Gabriel Tarziu at gabriel...@lmu.de. Contributions of any length are welcome. All proposals will be reviewed by the EENPS Steering Committee before publication, to ensure coherence with the aims and spirit of the blog.

We hope the blog will become an archive of experiences, insights, and reflections from across our region.

We look forward to receiving your contribution.

Best wishes,
Gabriel Tarziu, on behalf of the EENPS Steering Committee
