Over 200 students from the Institute of Geomatics, GIS and Remote Sensing (IGGReS) and other departments, IGGReS Staff and representatives from renowned GIS firms in Kenya stepped away from their daily routines to celebrate GIS Day at the University auditorium. This day is celebrated globally on the third Wednesday of November each year during Geography Awareness Week. The day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society, Under the theme “GIS for Sustainable Development” the day focused on how GIS and other geo-spatial technologies are being leveraged to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The DVC A&F, Prof. Gachari, during his opening remarks reinforced that GIS has now moved away from the technological users to everyone, the traditional usual sectors to every other sector. “Looking at the newspaper adverts nowadays, GIS has evolved to an extent it is being applied in everyday life’’, he added. Dr. Murimi Ngigi, Director IGGReS, iterated that the event will give GIS practitioners an opportunity to share the technological advancements in GIS and also provide a way of giving back to the society. “The Courses offered at the institute are in line with the changes and the department is developing short certificate courses that will target county officials with practical applications in the day to day operations. The institute is also in the process of reviewing the existing curriculum to accommodate the current technological applications”, he added. “Work place used to be a place where someone goes in order to start working,” remarked Mr Namasake, an assistant lecturer at the institute, during his presentation titled; The changes in the GIS world on behalf of Esri Eastern Africa. “Nowadays, people work while travelling, while at home watching news; they work from anywhere. GIS has evolved, it is now being used by everyone, anywhere, anytime using any device ranging from phones, tabs, laptops to desktop computers. GIS is not only being done as a course in the Universities, but it is now being used by the university management to plan, map their assets and enable them make sound decisions based on spatial analysis.” CoreTech, an emerging integration firm that mainly focuses on adding value to the investments organizations have made in the GIS by integrating their GIS with the other existing systems in the organization, was represented by Mr. Steve Omondi, an alumni from the institute who graduated in 2015. “A map is worth 1000 words, but integration is everything,” said Mr. Omondi during his presentation titled, Integrations with GIS. “The power of GIS is now being felt by organizations that are integrating the spatial datasets with other organizations workflows making work easier and also eliminating paperwork which is prone to manipulation and updating challenges. National Lands Commission is a classic example.” Lilan Waithaka, a representative from Oakar Services, a GIS firm specialized in GIS projects and one of the biggest employers of the GIS students being channeled out over the years observed that GIS jobs now range from sales, technical support to customization of applications based on the client needs that can be used in a particular organization. One can also be employed as a trainer to carry out training to the organizations that have acquired the GIS solutions being provided. She presented on The expectations of the GIS Job market. “The GIS job market has grown due to demand; unlike other disciplines, a GIS specialist can work anywhere in almost all the organizations in Kenya.” said Ms. Waithaka Students also presented their life changing innovations in GIS that they were working on, the event provided them an opportunity to showcase their talent and focus in GIS. The attendees to the event braced the afternoon rains to plant over 100 trees in the University compound leaving a permanent mark of the event.
