This position is an exciting opportunity to develop the volunteer program at a new outdoor education center, The Outdoor Campus-West, in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. This position will also create and implement outdoor education programs for participants of all ages. More specific duties include:
· Administer a program designed to recruit, train, and retain citizen volunteers to assist with the daily programming and functions of The Outdoor Campus-West.
· Create and conduct outdoor education programming that meets national education standards for youth, adults and groups (both on- and off-campus).
· Hire, train and supervise executive interns.
Must be able to obtain South Dakota driver's license.
Normal working hours upon hiring will be Monday through Friday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., with occasional evenings and weekends. Once the facility is completed (Spring/Summer 2011), normal working hours will shift to Tuesday through Saturday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M., with occasional evenings.
In-state travel is minimal. There is potential for out-of-state travel for professional development opportunities.
Successful applicant will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
College degree in natural resources, education or other related field is preferred. A minimum of 5-years of experience working with or managing volunteers, conducting education programs or similar experience preferred.
Knowledge of:
· outdoor recreation skills including, but not limited to, camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and all the subcategories within;
· correct, safe and ethical use of recreational equipment;
· cultural and natural history of western South Dakota;
· natural resource management;
· methods and techniques of interpretive programming;
· volunteer programs and volunteering.
Skills:
· excellent written and verbal communication skills;
· proficient with computer terminology and applications (extensive use of volunteer management database and desktop publishing software);
· skilled at interpersonal relationships.
Ability to:
· develop and implement training programs for volunteers and staff;
· effectively recruit and retain volunteers;
· organize and prioritize the work of others;
· develop and present educational programs to individuals and groups of varied ages;
· develop innovative and educational resource materials;
· establish effective positive working relationships with coworkers, community partners, schools, volunteers and other agency personnel;
· operate audio-visual and other multi-media technologies;
· plan and implement special events, professional development opportunities, etc;
· communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the public, staff, visitors, volunteers and constituents in a courteous and professional manner.
A KEYBOARDING SKILLS TESTS IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. Please arrange testing with your local South Dakota Department of Labor Field Office and request a certificate of proficiency to attach to your application.
