This one WILL be short.  Hot off the presses from NSTA.

The first draft of the Next Generation Science Standards is scheduled to be released this Friday, May 11.

This first draft of the new science standards will be online for public comment for three weeks, until June 1.

The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the National Research Council (NRC) Framework for K–12 Science Education, which describes the major practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school, and provides an outline of how these practices, concepts, and ideas should be developed across the grade levels.

Science educators, supervisors, administrators—in fact anyone interested in the future course and direction of science education—are encouraged to carefully read these new science standards and submit comments online to Achieve during the comment period.  (My note: EE people – this is the time to get our feedback included!!)

Thanks for sending this out, Anne!

As many of you may know, South Dakota is a lead state in the creation of the NGSS. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to plug my spiel.

*I just wanted to recommend that you at least read/skim through the Framework for K-12 Science Education prior to reviewing the standards. We have had some issues with misinterpretation due to lack of previous knowledge about the “vision for science education” found within the Framework. Please take some time to review at least the vision and the first two dimensions. It will help set the stage for what you will see in the standards documents. You can read it directly or download a free .pdf copy of the framework here: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13165

If you have any questions about the Framework or the NGSS, please let me know!

Regards,

Sam

P.s. We will be holding a seminar in Chamberlain, SD on June 18 (10am-2pm) regarding the Framework->NGSS and the vision for South Dakota. It would be nice to have some of you at the table to begin discussion. Please contact me ASAP if you are interested.
