Hello!
You are receiving this email because you have indicated an interest in an environmental literacy plan for South Dakota.
I am touching base to offer an update on the progress of the plan development. Nine listening sessions have been held statewide to solicit input and feedback about the plan from agency staff, parents, educators and interested community members. We would still like to hold a listening session in Eagle Butte. Please let me know if you have a contact that could help facilitate that.
You can see a summaries of the listening sessions at our wiki (http://sdelp.wikispaces.com/) at the Documents link. You can also see a draft outline of the plan.
One of the important components of an environmental literacy plan is what should students know. Much of this will be addressed by content standards. South Dakota is part of a consortium of states that are revising their science standards. These standards are now available online for public comment. I invite you to review these standards and comment upon them with an eye towards environmentally literacy. In today’s high stakes testing world, anything that happens in the classroom has to relate to standards. If environmentally literacy is not in the standards, it won’t be in the classroom. You can read and comment here: http://www.nextgenscience.org/
And finally, one of the recurring themes we heard in the listening session is the importance of the community in developing environmental literacy. As one teacher put it, “If the kids don’t get it in the community, they will leave it at school.” For this reason, there will be a call for mini-grant proposals to network and coordinate your community’s assets that promote environmental literacy which will culminate in a community Earth Day event. The RFP will be released in June with a due date of mid-September. Please sign up for the South Dakota Discovery Center Teacher E News (http://www.sd-discovery.com/newsletter.shtm#EducatorENews) to receive notice of the call for proposal.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments or suggestions.
Anne

Hi Anne,
Has the Earth Day rfp been released yet? The Pavilion will have a facility-wide Dr. Seuss exhibit up at that time and I thought it might be a fun way to involve Lorax and other organizations in Sioux falls to come together for a great event.

Hi Rose Ann,
The RFP release date has been postponed. As things stand now, it will be released on August 15 with proposals will be due October 10. The announcement will go out through the EECSD list serve and the South Dakota Discovery Center educator e-news.
In the next week or so I will also be sending out a request for reviewers to review proposals from North Dakota. Each state in EPA region 8 will have its own RFP and there will be a short training required to familiarize ourselves with North Dakota’s expectations in addition to the time spent reviewing up to 5 grants.
Hope this explains things. If not, contact me,
Anne
