tldr: Schedule's up on the website, check playoffs; can someone arrive at Levine-Fricke field at 6:30pm for a quick check before next Monday's game?

Hi Captains,

I've published the season schedule on the website. If you could, please give it a quick look it over and let me know if you see any obvious errors.

With the way the schedule shakes out (3 games once a week) each team will have a few double headers over the course of the season, so be prepared for a longer night of softball on those days. Also, in order to schedule umpires in a way that would avoid anyone being left with nothing to do for an hour, I ended up scheduling every team with a few "double umpiring days". I tried my best to avoid putting these back to back (instead I split them, with that ump's team playing a game in the middle). I figured that this would allow your teams to send different umps to the early/late games if you choose. If you really don't like that, please let me know and I'll see what else i can do—though I don't know if any of the other options will be any nicer.

Finally, I took a stab at creating a playoff structure with the last few weeks. Let me know if you think it looks ok or if you'd like to consider something different. I can potentially push the first playoff game (WC01) to Week 15, but this will mean that we may have less wiggle room on time to make sure that we get a winner if the game is tied at the end of the hour.

Lastly I will be traveling for our first game on the new field. Could I ask someone (preferably on DOF or iSchoolU) to arrive at Levine-Fricke 20-30 minutes early before the first game? I'd like to make sure that everything seems to be in order since we haven't played there before. Though I won't be in town, I should still be reachable if anything doesn't seem right.

I'll send out a league-wide email with more info later on today,

-Mitch

Awesome, thanks Mitch! I'll try to get there a little early on Monday.

Also, is this the sign-up form we're still using: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfVkIYVtqzkvxGomaKhNLa_rtFQMMaCPlJMu5j_w5-Y_wY_rA/viewform?c=0&w=1? I have some new players who need to register. Thanks.

Awesome, thank you!

Here, let's have them fill out this one. (https://forms.gle/YxYsQCfbMdr5wb2s9) I'm not sure where the other one is dumping it's output.

Thanks for putting this together Mitch! A couple of comments below:

1) For the playoff games, might be better to do 8-10pm instead of 7-9pm. I remember some people saying 7pm would be a bit early for them due to traveling from outside of Berkeley. If we're concerned about the hard lights cutoff at 10pm, we could shoot for 7:30-9:30pm.

2) Speaking of the lights cutoff, I would suggest having scheduled game times (listed on the website) start at X:50pm so that the actual game starts on the hour. That way the last game of the night doesn't get rushed.

3) I think the double umpire duty is ok, but here is one other possibility:

May 6
7 PM [G01]DOF@iSchoolUIHT
8 PM [G02]IHT@DOFiSchoolU
9 PM [G03]Tsar Bomba@SMSDOF
Week 2Umpire
May 13
7 PM [G04]DOF@SMSiSchoolU
8 PM [G05]iSchoolU@Tsar BombaSMS
9 PM [G06]IHT@iSchoolUTsar Bomba

In this setup, you have the doubleheader team umpire either before or after their DH. Not sure if this ends up being more or less fair in having all teams umpire the same number of games, but worth taking a look at. I don't really have a preference either way, but I know there are some teams that typically have one person umpire all their games, so not having to umpire twice in one night might be preferred.

4) For the first week, I would suggest that all umpires (at least 2 from each team) come to the field at 6:15 to review ground rules for the new field and make sure we're on the same page. I can help run this Mitch since you'll be out of town.

Also who has the gear? And can you make sure to bring it next Monday?

Thanks for the feedback! (And thank you for being willing to run the umpiring review—I've attached some pictures that I took of the field in case you/others would like to have a glance at them ahead of time.)

I hadn't taken difficulty making early games into account with the playoffs (just regular season), but I'm definitely open to moving them later. I went for the early slot so that if they ran long there would be time to spare, but a 7:30-9:30 slot might work well.

If it's possible, could I get an informal poll of you all as to whether you/your teams would prefer umpiring twice in a night on either side of a game or umpiring before/after a double header? The first is more work if your team has only one available umpire on a night, but lets you divide it up among your teams otherwise. The second is a easier for a single person to handle, but means that someone is almost guaranteed to go three hours each week. I'm not particularly partial to either one, so I'd love to have your inputs.

Finally, I/we (Tsar Bomba) have the gear in an office on campus, but I can help arrange a handoff.

Hey Captains

Just a reminder for all of us to meet tomorrow at 6:15pm to review ground rules for the new season. See you all tomorrow.

Also Mitch - did you get new game balls? If so can you stash a few in the gear bag? I can grab the gear from you or someone else from Tsar Bomba.

How many extra gloves are there? I’ve had a few new people express interest, but for the most part they don’t have gloves.
Great, thanks.

Hey everyone,

I forgot to mention, I am away at a conference today so I won't be able to attend the captain's meeting. Michael on my team is managing the team for our game at 9, but he can't make it for the captains meeting at 6:15.

Hope that is not too much of an inconvenience,
Erik

Great, thanks.

I also won't be able to make the 6:15 meeting. Ben may or may not be able to make it by 6:15 but he'll be there to ump the 6:50 game either way.

There should be game balls in the bag, probably the top/bottom pockets (not the big pocket?). I think Maria may be able to bring the gear for the umpiring meeting beforehand (but Maria, feel free to refute that if you need a hand getting it up there from Etcheverry).

Ellis, I believe that there may be 2-3 extra gloves in the bag. Not many, they aren't large, and I don't think there are any lefty gloves (but perhaps it's enough to get you by for a night or two).

If there aren't enough extra gloves, there are usually people on the other team willing to let you borrow one, so shouldn't be too much trouble. I will bring an extra glove as well.

Maria - I'll be driving up to the field, so let me know if you need help bringing the gear up the hill.

Hi Raj,

I can just walk the gear to the field, which is convenient enough since it's on wheels.

Best,

Maria

Good luck with the games tonight everyone!

I'll be checking my phone all night. If anything goes wrong (no lights, trouble with getting onto the field, etc.) please let me know an a I can try to help coordinate/call people at Cal Athletics to help out. My number is 774-266-2596.
