Hi Mitch,

It sounds like weekends would be OK for about 70% of our team, based on preliminary responses.

FYI the college of chemistry softball league had a similar field issue this summer and ended up at Cordonices Field. Is that an option for us? 

Also, somebody else on my team suggested that there is a field across from the Berkeley rose garden that they've played on in another league. 

Thanks for all your work in trying to figure out the field situation, both this summer and now!

Hi everyone,

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you all that I'm going to have to indefinitely suspend our fall season.

I have learned that there is very little chance that Rec Sports will fix the lights at Golden Bear Field, and so playing there during our current time slot is infeasible. Fixing the lights will reportedly cost thousands, and Rec Sports is not willing to foot that bill with their expectation that Cal Athletics will be taking control of that venue in the near future for the volleyball renovation. An alternative would be look at rescheduling our games there during daylight hours (essentially weekends), but this would be a big change for our league. If you could all let your captains know whether weekend games are something you'd entertain, I'd really appreciate it. I have very little sense about the league's opinion on that right now.

I am also back in discussions with Cal Athletics to see if we can find a time to play on Levine-Fricke again. Their scheduling team informed me multiple times that there was no availability, but a higher-up in their organization is taking another look. There seemed to be times last week where the field was unused, so I'm holding out hope. If that proves successful, we may be able to play there starting in the next few weeks. However, they shut that field down for maintenance in November, so any time we get there will be brief. Any available slots might also not be on Mondays or Tuesdays, but we'll have to wait and see.

As for where we go in the future, I'm beginning the process of exploring our options in terms of Berkeley-area city fields. I'll keep you updated if I find something workable there, but I don't expect that to materialize in the next couple weeks. 

Again, I'm really sorry for all the inconvenience and frustration here. I'll be sure to let you all know as soon as I learn more about if and when we can resume. Best of luck to all of you as we enter the thick of the fall semester, and I hope to see you out on the field soon.
