Hello All,  I would like to enable the star student rating and reviews widget within my edx installation but for the life of me can't find any settings, or configuration options that would allow me to do so.

I see this feature is enabled on the Demo app.

Can someone point me to what bit to flip or installation notes?

Thanks!

Allen

Hi Allen,

I'm actually not sure what feature you're referring to. Could you add some screenshots so I can understand what feature you're trying to enable?

Best,
Sarina

Sure, it's the course review sidebar widget found on many of the edX courses at edX.org.  I think it came from the Course Talk integration done earlier this year.   I've attached a screen shot.

Still looking for help enabling this widget in my edX install.  Anyone have any ideas where I might find it?

Thanks!

Sorry you didn't get an answer for this. The Course Review widget on edx.org is actually not part of the code base. Our marketing/course discovery site on edx.org is running in a Drupal platform and - as it is specific to edX as a company - we have not open sourced that component.

I would suggest you contact the Course Talk company directly to see what options you might have to use that service.

Thanks Chris -- I was going nuts trying to find this :-)

Also, I should have added that if you have Python/Django coding experience, adding a "Course Review/Rating" set of features probably would not be very hard to do, maybe about a month of time for an experienced Django developer. I'm sure the community would really appreciate such a contribution.

Good luck,

Chris

Chris - my sense is that reviews/ratings are something that are valuable to have all-in-one-place (like coursetalk.com or some equivalent), so my sense is that integrating a Coursetalk widget (looks like there's a page about how to do that here: http://www.coursetalk.com/widgets/search) might be more valuable both for the particular site and for the community than a home-grown solution.

Is there a reason I'm not seeing that storing reviews separately on each site is better?

Good point. I have no strong feeling about a homegrown solution in the code. I just wanted to map out the complete solution set, as I've heard this request a few times in my travels regarding customer-specific solutions and customizations and - in those use cases - my understanding is that they would have wanted a private solution.

Naturally, those customers didn't move forward with such a feature - and as such - we haven't taken on designing/implementing a native solution in the platform.

Jane,

Do you know if CourseTalk gives full information back to MOOC providers? One of the major use-cases to controlling reviews in-platform is being able to generate recommendations, flag issues with courses, and similar, as well as tie back negative/positive reviews to specific actions in courses (if nothing else, AB tests). If this lives in an external platform, that sort of work may be challenging.

Good question, Piotr, I hadn't been thinking about that.  But I saw your email right before I had a call with them this afternoon, and the answer is that they don't have an API for this yet, but they can deliver full information back as a csv file.  So the answer is "sort of". (I could imagine lots of cases for which this would be too clunky, but it's better than nothing.)
