No, that’s incorrect. The “Birch” release of the Open edX software was released at the end of February, and many improvements and new features have gone into the Open edX codebase since then. EdX releases a new version of the Open edX software to edx.org at least once a week, and provides weekly release notes to document what has changed from week to week. (These release notes are designed for the universities running courses on edx.org to read, but they are public, and anyone can read them if they want to.)

In addition, edx.org uses a Drupal-based marketing website in front of the Open edX codebase, and that marketing website is not open source. However, the LMS (courseware) and Studio system used by edx.org are identical to the ones in the Open edX codebase — because edx.org deploys directly from the Open edX codebase.

Does that answer your question, Mohannad?

Just one quick addition to David's reply. There will be another "named release" of Open edX in the near future which will contain (basically) all of the features in the LMS and Studio (as well as other subsystems) running on edx.org that have been developed since the Birch (Feb). The Open edX team here will be managing communications/announcements on that soon.

That said, anyone from the Open edX community can take a current build - at any time - off of the "release" branch of edx/edx-platform. However it will not be nicely packaged into a formal release, so it is an option only recommended for more advanced users/operators of Open edX.

Best wishes,

Chris

The next planned release, Cypress, is targeted for a mid-July release. I'm not sure if that counts as near future or not :)
