I am trying to follow the instructions here:
to get pycharm to play nice with the vagrant image. Thank you to all those who contributed to that page.

I can follow (and understand) all the instructions, except for the "path mappings" one. There is simply no way I can find to add these "path mappings", it seems to be missing from my version of PyCharm (OSX 10.8.5, PyCharm professional edition, paid, academic pricing). I posted on their support forum but am not getting any answer.

On the other hand, I did see this answer:
(for me this goes into an xml in the project_name/.idea/runConfigurations folder)

If the instructions on the wiki work for you, your machine is similar, and you could export your config according to those instructions, I could try to fix things myself directly in my xml.

Depending on how well this works, we could even share back such configuration files on the github wiki to automate the 2 billion steps needed for getting pycharm to work.

I just followed the directions myself. The Path mappings field only shows up if you have chosen a remote Python interpreter for the new Run/Debug configuration. Can you double check that the settings for the remote python interpreter that you configured in the prior step were saved and applied to the project?

You were right, it wasn't saved. I can't tell you why though: I just re-did the same procedure three times and only the third time did it manage to save. It might have to do with applying as well.
Thanks to those who wrote the wiki page and others who answered my questions about pycharm!
