Sir Banister Fletcher's A History of Architecture is an engrossing read. This history of architecture is historically important, as it is a historical record of how people lived through time, right up to the modern era. This book is written by Sir Banister Fletcher, who is one of Britain's leading authorities on medieval and post medieval architecture. Sir Banister is also a keen collector of historical items, including swords and armor, as well as other forms of historic art. He is also well versed in the history of engineering, having worked as an architect in London.
Sir Banister Fletcher's book covers much ground, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the flowering of the Renaissance, with a brief excursion into the Glorious Revolution. He also covers aspects of medieval times, which he feels are as important as the periods of history that he writes about, such as the rise of Gothic architecture. In addition, Sir Banister has a great deal of knowledge on medieval weaponry and armor. This book, he states, is the only one of its kind to use authentic research materials, resulting in a verifiable and accurate account of how armor was used during this era. Sir Banister has spent considerable years collecting materials on medieval armor, many of which he obtained while serving with the Army in the Middle East. This was a life time experience, which he combines with his knowledge on military matters, resulting in a very balanced account of armor and warfare.
The History of Architecture, written by Sir Banister Fletcher, is a great little book. It does not offer a great deal in the way of depth in terms of time or culture, but it is nevertheless very informative, with well-organized and detailed pages. It is a quick read, which at times can seem a bit redundant, especially the end, but then again, it is the case with most of Sir Banister's works, which have the occasional grammatical flaw that one would expect from an English writing degree of any degree, as it is the case with most of his books. However, in spite of this fault, the overall quality of this book is still very good. Sir Banister is a very entertaining and knowledgeable author, whose works I have enjoyed reading over the years.
