The Enjoyment of Music by Forney is a text and audio book designed for students of all ages to learn and enjoy music through all of its forms--in both audible and visual forms. Listen. Learn. Share. The best tools for cultivating listening skills for students--from the birth of in-text, sound-reading Listening Guides to the creation of cutting-edge online pedagogy--have been developed by The Enjoyment of Music for 60 years.
Beginning with the introductory lesson, "Learn to Enjoy Music," the book provides a logical introduction to music theory and musical theater. Students are encouraged to become more familiar with the structure of music, with scales and modes, and with improvisation. Musical theater and other dramatic forms are brought into light through discussions of plot, theme, and performers. As you move through each chapter, some of the many musical theater styles, themes, and performers are covered, including opera, cowboy play, Indian sagas, classical comedies, and the popular genres of film Western and dramatic realism.
The fifth chapter covers basic concepts and practice exercises. The eighth chapter looks at ensemble practices and includes essays on conducting as an ensemble, and on writing lyrics and music for screenplays. The final chapter looks at technical considerations for conducting and includes a useful bibliography. The book ends with a recommendation of three recommended books: John Martine, ed., Anais Nin, and Joseph Pilates.
