Exploring Medical Anthropology by Joralemon entitled "Medical anthropology: The Other End of the Visible World" provides detailed descriptions of medical anthropology, with a focus on medical ethnobotanical and cultural definitions of disease, aging, medicine, and body image. The book describes the practice of anthropological research as an important sociological science, concerned with understanding people at the individual level through the approach of physical, cultural, and social research. The book describes various models of anthropology--ranging from passive observation to active participation--and how to organize empirical research and observations. These include topics such as "Anthropology and Medicine," Anthropology and Medicine: A Meta-View," "Medical Aspects of Forensic Anthropology," anthropological perspectives on mental illness," "Medical Aspects of Body Image," "Body Size and Gender as Factors in Obesity," anthropological perspectives on ritual and belief," anthropological perspectives on disability." In addition, the book explores medical research and theoretical reflections.

Introduction- Cover-- Illustrations and Descriptions of the Various Studies Within the Book, I found that the book was very interesting and easy to read. I liked the photographs of patients taken by the photographers throughout the history of medicine. I also enjoyed the descriptions of pathogens and their cures. It was a pleasure to read Joralemon's voice, and it is easy to understand his vocabulary and his way of speaking. I found that much of what he described took place easily and just as easily could be described using current terms and concepts.
Summary-- I find that this book is an excellent primer on medical anthropology and highlights areas that require further research. There are many discussions of ethics and much of the book deals with the methodology of anthropological research. However, this book is not a research or even a primer on the history of medicine. It is a very good introduction to the subject, and Joralemon provides a very good account of how anthropological research is done today. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of medicine and wants to know more about it.
