Biological Science (5th Edition) PDF
In "Biological Science by Freeman" the author, Freeman, deals with the importance of understanding the way that knowledge has developed over the years. At the start of the book the author relates the history of the development of the biological sciences and how they have developed and spread throughout the world. The chapters on biology are generally excellent, providing a good background to the knowledge bases of the various areas of biology. The detailed descriptions of viruses, bacteria and cells, as well as their usefulness in fighting disease, are interesting and engaging.
The book then goes into how the development of scientific knowledge is driven not only by discoveries made by scientists but also by social knowledge. There is a section which looks at how knowledge has been spread across time and space and how this has affected knowledge between different parts of the world. The history of the book briefly traces the development of knowledge across cultures and provides examples such as the difference between Chinese and Native American languages, the development of European knowledge about Africa and Central Asia and the ways in which knowledge has spread across the Middle East. This history of the development of knowledge is also useful in understanding how knowledge has been shaped through the process of scientific and technological change. The book then looks at how new knowledge has replaced older forms of knowledge and discusses the consequences of this change in two areas: the impact on science and technology and the need for more sustainable forms of research and technology development.
The book concludes with a short section looking at what the future might hold for biology. While the potential for great things beyond our present knowledge is strong, the author does offer some reminders that we have only just begun to understand the living world we inhabit today. The increasing complexity of biological systems calls for a greater sense of humility about the scope and power of our own understanding. The increasing diversity of species and the interconnectedness of all life is clearly one of the many compelling themes explored in "Biological Science by Freeman".
