The Norton Field Guide to Writing is a classic reference work on writing which is aimed at the novice writer, and even the more experienced and highly disciplined writer. It was first published in 1950 and remains one of the most popular books of all time, and is still used today as a classic case study on how to write. However, it has also been widely praised for its "nervous" nature, and the writer himself admitted that some of the content may have been hard to write. The book has received many accolades, including being one of the seven books that comprise The Halliday Series of novels.
The book covers all areas of writing, from story concepts to screenplays and poems. In addition to the case studies, the book also offers exercises and "genetic templates" for successful writing. While there are parts which would be useful for any newbie, some of the advice given may seem a little skewed towards established authors and has definitely been taken with a pinch of salt by some of the more cynical critics. Nevertheless, the book is a tremendous help to budding writers. The advice and examples gathered here would surely prepare any new author with the fundamentals of writing, in addition to providing an extremely helpful set of principles and stylistic pointers.
The book covers topics such as using correct grammar, how to build good character names, the proper formatting of your essays, how not to overuse your adjectives and adverbs, proper punctuation, how to choose and use vivid imagery, and much more. The book has been heralded by those who have read it, as well as by numerous people who have found out how well Bullock has presented his material here. The main thing that people like about The Norton Field Guide to Writing is its "writer's guide." Instead of merely listing out the rules and "how-to's," this book gives you the tools and guidance you need to become a good writer.
