The Canadian Learning Experience (CLN) is a series of books, articles, and web pages designed to support understanding of Canadian nursing. Available as an e-book and a hard copy book, Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter RN MSN PhD FAAN is an excellent resource for understanding the content of this important book series. The third edition of Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing is devoted to covering the nursing education concepts of the third edition of Canadian Clinical Regulations for nurses (CCRN) and the principles that govern the nursing practice in Canada. The editors maintained that the book should serve the nursing profession and be useful to nurses, other health care workers, policy makers, and educators. This book serves as an excellent companion to the National Association of Boards of Nursing continuing education requirements and nursing certification programs, as it describes and applies the content found in Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing.
According to the National Association of Boards of Nursing, "The principles are designed to prevent regulatory misunderstanding and provide basic information to help nurses recognize, describe, and evaluate the medical practice". These principles build on the fundamental values of nursing which are based on respect for human dignity, mutual trust and respect, consideration of each person's individuality, commitment to quality care, appropriate communication and open communication, and protection of patient confidentiality. They also emphasize prevention, awareness, and early intervention, as well as providing assistance to those who need it most. These principles form the basis for many of the clinical services and treatments provided in Canadian hospitals and clinics.
Following the introduction of the Principles of Prevention, the next chapters cover the principles of Breastfeeding Mothers and Their Mothers, the principles of Diagnosis and Care, the principles of Therapeutic Steps, the principles of Practice, Hospital Policies and Procedures, the principles of Nursing Orderly Treatment, the principles of Adoption and Family Therapy, the principles of Clinical Nursing Care, the principles of Ethics in Nursing Practice, the principles of Medical Record Keeping, and the principles of the legal responsibilities of nursing staff. The fourth chapter of the book is titled Principles of Compensation and finally, the fifth chapter focuses on guidelines for Canadian Residents and their respective families. There is also a comprehensive list of links provided to related organizations and resources on CRN's website. A glossary of medical terms and medical Terminologies is also included.
