Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology in PDF
Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology by Butterworth is an engaging little book about managing pain and discomfort in a way that will help you avoid unnecessary surgery. While the title says it all, there are bits and pieces that reveal much about the role of pain, discomfort and fear in our lives and how to manage it. If you're interested in learning more about the world of pain management, this book provides a quick overview of the field and a nice primer on managing pain. Some of the topics covered include the definition of pain, its causes and what causes it; the relationship between pain and disease, and the use of anesthesia and sedation in medicine.
What I like about the book as a whole is that Butterworth has been a chronic patient surgeon for both of his academic doctorates and has worked at a Level 1 Trauma Center since leaving medical school. He has undoubtedly seen and treated many difficult patients in this setting and is very up front with the reader about the realities of what can happen when people decide to forego anesthesia. For instance, a patient may have an allergic reaction to local anesthesia and travel across the state to get the local anesthesia he needs. When he does this, Butterworth explains that anesthesia errors might result in the patient requiring another round of local anesthesia in order to avoid the adverse reaction. These types of errors lead to unnecessary pain and suffering and should never be tolerated by anyone involved in the process.
A few small typos and grammatical mistakes detract from the otherwise excellent content of Morgan & Marekhar's Clinical Anesthesia by Butterworth. However, these do not take away the professionalism of the text or the ideas presented. The majority of the book is devoted to teaching the reader about pain, why it is caused and why some forms of pain are more "painful" than others. Anesthesia errors that result in excessive pain should be identified and avoided so that future patients are not put under any undue stress as a result. This book teaches readers what to do if they make an anesthesia error that results in pain or if they are in any way responsible for an anesthesia error that has resulted in pain or suffering for another patient.
