When I teach Signing Naturally, I teach my students about the power of music to bring our minds into a space that they can access intuitively and deeply to process the information that words can only sometimes access. Music is the language of the soul, the heart, the mind, the brain, and the subconscious. It can literally be the key that opens up those mysterious doors. So how do you get your students to begin the Signing process? Let's talk about some great ways to get students into the mindset for signing:
Music & movement - There are a plethora of great CDs and DVDs by Cheri Smith, who has powerful music that will get your students into the proper mindset for signing. If one particular song touches upon something in your classes, it might be worth your students taking an additional look at the song. If they can identify the source of the sound, they'll be able to identify the meaning. For example, there are a couple of songs by The Beatles that are great choices for students to learn from when learning Signing Naturally.
Movement - There are many amazing dance pieces that students can learn from. Some of my students are now majoring in ballet, so they are required to take dance classes throughout their four-year degree program. Even if your class doesn't offer much ballet, there are a ton of great ballet music pieces that you can expose your students to. My students absolutely love watching videos on YouTube, and some of them just open up the video on their computer and let the videos play. As well, I suggest looking for new dance music as often as possible, because it is always great to be able to recommend a new song in your class.
