Dear educational justice fighters,
We, the editors of the book “What’s Race Got To Do With It: How Current School Reform Policy Maintain Racial and Economic Inequality,” invite you to contribute “artifacts of resistance” to racist neoliberal education reforms. The goal of the book (set to be released in 2015) is to provide critical analysis on current and specific market-based school reform through a lens that links political economy and critical studies of race and whiteness. As part of Peter Lang’s series, Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness, this book will attempt to reveal ways in which race and specifically Whiteness are used/masked in reforms such as school closings, mayoral control and other hallmark neoliberal reforms, and how it operates in very real ways to maintain White supremacy.
Integrated throughout the book will be a collection of artifacts of resistance that document local ways that the various reforms discussed in the book have been resisted or challenged in the U.S. The specific reforms being analyzed in the book are the following:
High stakes testing
School closings
EdTPA
Mayoral control- school governance
Charter schools
Attack on collective bargaining
School choice
Philanthrocapitalism
State takeovers of school districts
Artifacts can include photos (see image below), posters, short statements, speeches, and poems, among other ideas. The submissions will enhance the power of each chapter by providing tangible and inspirational examples of how struggles for educational justice are taking place across this nation. Please note that not all submissions will be included in the book as there is a limited number of entries that can fit. If you are interested in submitting, or if you have questions about the project please contact us via email: Edwin Mayorga (edwin....@gmail.com) or Bree Picower (pico...@mail.montclair.edu).
Please feel free to send this to along to others.
We look forward to considering your artifacts.
In justice,
