Google's new real-time search Web page and the instant search results
capabilities spotted in the wild point to the company's vision for the
future of search: real-time everywhere.
Two Google news items from last week painted a clear picture of where
Google is in real-time search and where it is going in the future.
The company revamped its real-time search capabilities and is testing
instant search capabilities that update on the fly.
Announced Aug. 26, the real-time search upgrades move Twitter tweets and
Facebook and MySpace updates on trending topics from Google's traditional
search results pages to their own special Web page.
Users may still access real-time search data on Google's traditional
search engine by clicking the "latest" link in the search filters located
in the left-hand rail.
However, users will no longer see real-time results integrated with
standard results. Now real-time results, along with geographic
refinements, a "full conversation" feature and updates contents piped to
Google Alerts, appear here on Google's Realtime search Web page.
Google has essentially followed Microsoft Bing's approach by creating a
separate Web page with its own set of search filters, a move that IDC
analyst Hadley Reynolds said is wise.

Editor's Note: With the recent Yahoo-Bing merger, search engine
optimization (SEO), paid search, and website conversion experts have seen
the big three search engines become a two horse race in 2010. Google and
Bing are the dominant players, yet it might be a mistake to think that
their position is uncontested. In fact, as Google has said themselves,
"competition is just one click away" and Forrester research in 2008
reported that users are in a permanent state of readiness to switch.
Pressure on these two behemoths is coming from niche players and vertical
search engines. One could argue that the search space is becoming
fragmented again -- much like it was before 2002 when Google hit a home
run with the launch of Google AdWords.

In July, Biz Stone said at the Chirp conference that Twitter was handling
800 million search queries every day. Other real-time players, such as
OneRiot, Collecta, and Wowd, are establishing themselves too, with
completely different interfaces, methodologies, and aims as to what they
can offer users via the real-time vertical.

Furthermore, Google and Bing's dominance of "traditional" or "archival"
web search is now being contested by foreign language search engines
Yandex and Baidu. Both have made moves toward internationalization; Yandex
now offers an English language index and Baidu has opened offices in
Silicon Valley. Arguably these companies can provide a genuine threat to
the status quo if they play their cards right.

Google expanded its commitment to providing real-time search results by
introducing a new site devoted to searching live content, as well as new
tools aimed at helping users parse the information collected more easily.
The live search would be available at www.google.com/realtime, which the
company is launching on a rolling basis Thursday. It indexes content from
social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Google first
introduced basic realtime search last December, allowing users to more
accurately search for current trending topics.

Competitor Bing has already committed itself to realtime search, striking
deals with Twitter in October of last year and Facebook to include their
content in search results.
Product manager Dylan Casey called the new functionality "our most
significant enhancements to date." The realtime search product would be
available globally in 40 languages, and would either be accessible via the
service's direct URL or by clicking "Updates" when viewing traditional
search results.

Google's new image search results, for instance, display a blend of images
so getting the top two or three results isn't as important.
More frustrating is the new "overlay" result that pops up a Web page
image, obscuring the rest of the page.
"Basically this is an invitation to, yes, right click and steal this
image," Fishkin said.
He suggested websites add a few lines of code to "essentially break this
functionality, so people get full page results instead of overlay."

Simple steps that people can take to improve their Twitter traffic include
filling out the 160-character biography field on their Twitter account.
Zarrella's analysis of 5 million accounts found that Twitter uses with
bios listed on average have six times more followers.
Similarly, most users don't add their own picture and use Twitter's
default avatar, and most don't bother to add a link to their website.
Zarrella said accounts with links have six times more followers, and those
with a picture also had a "lot more" followers.
Other advice was almost counterintuitive. For instance, talking too much
about yourself on Twitter tends to result in fewer followers.
"If you want more followers, don't talk about yourself so much," he
advised.
Instead, use the site to "talk inclusively" about groups of people you're
talking to on Twitter.
Negative tweets also tend to decrease followers, perhaps because people
are going on Twitter to be more hopeful, he said.
