What's the difference between the TOEFL exams? I don't know which one
I should take.
International Testing Program exams are administered in both paper and
computer format at Prometric Testing Centers around the world. The
iBT or Internet Based TOEFL is the International TOEFL exam regarded
as the 'official' TOEFL exam requested by most universities and
institutions, in which English is the language of instruction. In
order to take this exam, the applicant must register by contacting
Prometric in the US and submitting the proper fee at the time of
registration. On the day of the exam, the examinee may request that
their scores be sent to up to four universities or institutions. For
exams taken outside the US, results may arrive in up to four weeks.
The exam is valid for only two years.
Institutional Testing Program (ITP) exams are administered in paper
format at various institutions around the world. This exam is used
for placement into and evaluation of progress in intensive English
programs at various institutions and universities, as well as
evaluation of examinee's English proficiency for non-educational
purposes. This exam uses tests that have been previously administered
for the International TOEFL exam, therefore the ITP tests do not meet
the security standards established for admissions requirements. ITP
does have the same structure and level of difficulty as the
international exam. Other advantages to this exam are the speed of the
results, usually only a couple days, and that it is much more
economical. In order to take this exam, the applicant must contact an
Institutional TOEFL exam center.
The main difference between the international TOEFL and the
institutional TOEFL is that the institutional is only valid here in
Mexico and the international is valid in the United States as well. If
you need this exam to apply to college in the U.S. you must take the
international TOEFL, but if you only need it for a Mexican institution
you can take the institutional TOEFL.
